OW OW OW Aka trapped fingertip in door

I've trapped my fingertip in my front (heavy fireproof) front door.

I've now got a lovely blue bruise under my nail, it's really sore, its not more than half the size of my nail though.

What should I do? Chemist? Drs in the morning?

ouch!

personally, i wouldn't do anything

DS3 did this and they x-rayed it and he had fractured the tip, but they don't actually DO anyhting for it so it was kind of a waste of time!

Thanks for the reply :). Did his nail fall off or was it ok? Oh man I can't describe the pain!

bag of ice?

you have my sympathies - I did the same a few weeks ago.

probably not much a GP can do.

is the tip of the finger warm/hot? if it's cold then it might be worth getting it checked out as it could indicate circulation problems.

hope that helps?

If the nail is black/blue and your finger starts to throb really painfully, you can ease it by making a hole in the nail - it wants to swell but can't because the nail is there IYSWIM.

don't read this next bit if you're squeamish!

The nail is already separated from the underlying finger so it doesn't hurt, you just heat a needle in a flame then touch it to the nail, the nail will melt a bit to make a tiny hole. The trapped blood will come out of the hole and it will hurt a lot less!

It's more the pad of my finger now that's painful, using ice and cursing myself for being an idiot!

When I was little I saw an episode of casualty where they did just as described and it horrified me, the blood shooting everywhere. Just typing that makes me feel sick! It's always stuck with me so my first thought was oh god, like casualty! Blush

If it gets any worse ill go to the doctors :)

I did this a week ago - omg the pain! It was the same in that the tip felt painful but it was because the pressure had built up so much.

I did it on the Friday afternoon and hung on till the Monday morning when I thought I'd better go to the doctors as I was still needing to take painkillers every 4 hours. He had a gadget that was basically just a swish version of the hot needle trick. The blood didn't squirt out ala casualty, but it did bleed for literally 2 hours. Didn't hurt one bit and totally worth it!

chufmuffin, his nail was mostly ripped off, but they shoved it back under because you have to keep the nailbed open to make a new one grow (or something)
anyway, it did then fall off, but a new one grew

we then had another accident where DS2 had his little finger shut in the hinge side of the door (fear not, hinge guards are now fitted!) and his was amazingly not broken at all.
nail went completely black though underneath and then fell off, but again a new one grew
