Has anyone had a hysterectomy purely down to heavy periods and pmt?

If you have could you please tell me what kind of operation was offered to you? Did you keep your ovaries or not?

I had a womb ablation for mine. A hysterectomy was mentioned (keeping ovaries) but I went for this instead.

I wish I'd gone for the hysterectomy, 3 years on and I'm waiting for a full hysterectomy.

Thanks. I had an ablation 6 weeks ago. Blood pouring out of me. No improvement so asking to to refer me back. I just want to be as prepared as possible when I meet with the consultant.

I didn't realise the lining grew back, it has, but into the wall of my womb, I'm in agony.

I'm having my ovaries out but I have PCOS. Though I think if you are over 45 they will take them out anyway.

If you are bleeding so heavy at six weeks I would go to A&E to be honest. It doesn't sound right.

I have a phone appointment with the Dr this afternoon so I will see what she says.

cocolepew... have a pre op assesment for ablation tomorrow... by the sounds of it you aren't having a fab time?? I am too young for hysterectomy I AM 25, unless this doesn't work and have tried everything but the coil for heavy bleeding that usually lasts 3wks... my gynae has finally agreed to do this, but is it the way to go? How long have you been waiting for a hysterectomy for?

Dr was great. Said he would refer me back for a consultation immediately. Hopefully that will be through by the end of June so I can talk it through with the consultant.

Internet tells me I am looking at a vaginal hysterectomy leaving my ovaries. Still worried that they might bully me again for the merina which I have rejected.

Can't go on like this.

Gregs - just out of interest why have rejected the Mirena? It is the best thing I have ever done, I have no bleeding at all now. I wish I'd had one years ago.

I used to work with someone who did, total removal of everything.

She went on to HRT two days later.

She said it was the best thing ever. It used to flood out of her.

Mainly due to migraines. I'd rather deal with bleeding than migraines.

Too many horror stories too. Weight gain, loss of sex drive, acne, bleeding for months on end, problems getting it in. Bigger problems getting the dr to take it out if you have symptoms. Too many people with too many symptoms and multiple symptoms. I don't like having a foreign body in my fanjo either.

I'm now on the list for a hysterectomy for the same types of problems that coco is having. didisay have they explained to you that pregnancy (if your that way inclined) is very risky and not recommended? Just out of curiosity why not the coil?

I'm 35 and have had gynae problems that got worse after the birth of DD 5 years ago. Tried different types of pill, tranaxaemic and menafemic acid, mirena (made it worse), was deemed unsuitable for other types of the coil due to vvv heavy bleeding so finally had a mesh ablation. Cured the bleeding.....or so I thought. Turns out that my uterus is now the size it would be if I was 6-7 months pregnant due to lining growing in pockets (who knew you could have pockets in your uterus??)

The ablation was great, don't get me wrong, I stopped having periods completely. Unfortunately it has gone wrong growing back. I have been told I have 'old' endometriosis scarring so maybe I was prone to this happening without realising it. I had TVT at the same time so I can't comment on the op or recovery period for just it.

I now have adenomyosis and haven't been able to work since November, but my job is very physical.

From the date of my consultation it is within 20 weeks they have to do my op, so hopefuly next month.

I tried the Mirena after DD2 but had it removed, I had SPD and the hormone in the coil aggrevated this.

Kindle my womb is massive too !

I have always had gynae problems I'm not surprised I need a hysterectomy to be honest, I ended up paying to see a consultant this time, unfortunately I was getting nowhere wirh the Dr I was seeing who insisted it was a bladdder prolapse even though i knew for sure it wasn't.

Hi DidIsaythatoutLoud If you are looking to have an ablation done I recommend having it. I had it done nearly two years ago and it has sorted out my heavy periods. I still get periods but not like before. I am aware though that the endometrium does grow back over time and suspect I will need a hysterectomy further down the line.

Cocolepew and kindle I had no idea that the womb lining could grow back all over the place:( I wish you both all the best and hope you can get sorted out soon.

gregssausageroll Sorry the ablation didn't work. Your story does sound unusual so it's good you're being referred back.

My problem now seems to be recurring cysts:( so I'm also being referred back to gynae but that's another story!

Hi, sorry about late reply... my periods started when I was 9 and I am now 25... in that time I have had implant twice (constant bleeding on both..for about a year.. that was whilst I was taking a pill, and even dioxcycline (an antibiotic can you believe) to try and slow the bleeding) I had a really bad reaction to combined pill, and when I was on it back to back I got caught pregnant, The pill injection also made me bleed for a realllly long time (I only had one injection)... it's actually calmed since having children, the loss of blood used to make me faint..basically I have tried everything BUT the coil, because I told my gynae I could NOT cope of being left to bleed for another year non-stop..
Also my family has a history of migraines...my mum wasn;t long ago diagnosed with hyper...hemaplegic migraines...something like that.
There are several reasons mainly I just can't cope anymore, I am also a carer to my hubby and it makes it much harder for me! And yes they did explain about pregnancy etc, but they orignially told me I probably wouldn't have children anyway so am blessed with my girls!
I had a laparoscopy and a vagi- thing (where they used the camera to see what was going on) but there were no cysts, polyps, scars and my first smear was normal...I just bleed because that's how I am :(

It is nice to know that I am not alone, and I can't be more sincere when I say I really bloody hope they get you all sorted (and me) I think that if you don't have ovaries removed you'll still have periods won't you? It's not something I've researched but I don't think I'm making it up?

Haha, I too do not want a foreign object in my vajay-jay!!! My pre-assesment is tomorrow... is it just a quick recovery? They said just cramping but can someone please reassure me this is the case..I can't afford to be out of action... xxx

If you have your ovaries you will have normal hormone function but obviously no bleeding.

DidIsayThat, if you have finished your family you might be offered a hysterctomy. It all depends on the Dr. If you think it would be best for you bring it up. I notice you are a carer for your DH, after my op I was told NO lifting anything heavier than a teacup. But I don't know if that was because of the TVT I had.

My ovaries are coming out as the right one is a mass of cysts, I was in and out of A&E and saw by at least 4 different gynae drs. Not one of them told me about my ovaries, even though I said about the awful pain I was getting.

The Dr I paid mentioned it straight away [hmmm]

I wonder if I do get a hysterectomy if there is any point in keeping my ovaries? My PMT is bonkers. I have lots of questions to ask.

I'm keeping 1 ovary because the other is riddled with cysts.....or at least that's the plan. My op notes are likely to be full of +/- blahdeblah because they are planning on keyhole/ vaginal but might need abdominal depending on what the laparoscopy shows. The doc is planning on doing a laparoscopy at the same time because he says there's no point in doing it as separate procedure when we already know the hysterectomy is needed. Depending on the amount of adhesions etc they'll decide which way to procede.

Doc wants me to keep at least 1 ovary if possible so that I don't go hurtling into the menopause. Having said that I'm due to go for my first Zolodex injection tomorrow (minimises the lining before op) and the list of side effects is enough to make you wonder which is worse

Thanks Kindle... I did labour, and bad periods... I can do cramping... but my god do I freak out at the ANTICIPATION of pain, when it's happening it's fine but the thought... :(

All so confusing, ovaries and whatnot... it's a shame we weren't all born with an on/off switch ;)

PMT can be helped by injections that stop ovaries from working.. but if you are already having one not sure if that is helpful to you

Well, had the 1st Zolodex injection. Soooo glad I didn't look at the size of the needle..... The implant goes under the skin and apart from the initial jab didn't hurt. The nurse was trying it for the first time and said that she was so glad that the whole thing went so smoothly cos people always tense their abs when getting injections in the area. Obviously there is no correlation between the podginess of my belly and the ease of insertion

I can't believe you would choose to have such major surgery without even trying a Mirena?
It was the best thing I ever did 12 years ago and hopefully it will see me through the menopause. Yes a few minor issues but compared with the bleeding I endured and the alternative of a hysterectomy along with all the risks associated with surgery......no contest.
My GP reckons it has saved countless women from surgery.

When I took the decision to have the implant taken out and no longer use that or depo or any pill based contraception my migraines just about disappeared. Migraines for me were massive and frequent. Days and days in bed Trips to a&e in the middle of the night in so much pain I'd vomit and (sorry) shit myself. I can't see, talk, walk, lie down anything when I have one. They have all but disappeared. I can still get them but I have enough trigger signs to try and stop an attack. I nevere had triggers before. Nothing stopped them until I stopped medicating for contraception. The thought of a foreign body inside me that could cause this again is more terrifying than having a hysterectomy.

I am told merina needs to be in your body for a minimum of 6 months to even see if it would work. Sorry but that is too big a risk. At least with bleeding I can stay home and be with ds. With a migraine I can't do anything. If you have neve suffered and I don't know if you have then you wouldnt know how bad they can be.

I have to agree with Greggs. IMO the decision to have such major surgery is not one that is made without having tried every other option that is available out there and most docs won't even entertain the idea unless your quality of life is so poor that it's the only option. The ablation is slightly less drastic but really is only a stop gap for those of us with bad gynae histories and TBH is a big step for any one who is of child bearing age because it is effectively telling you that you can never risk pregnancy. The way my doc explained it, it is really a hysterectomy without the surgery

Sorry I had never heard of Merina causing migrane.
Mine worked instantly though. I went from such floods and clots that I daren't leave the house to a few spots each month.

Secret , it's the hormones involved that cause the migraines, at least it is for me. Even now, although I don't bleed, around the time of ovulation I get horrendous migraines.

Currently suffering from one although meds are helping. Wondering how much of it may be linked with the Zolodex I had yesterday.

Can you not use the copper coil? ie the one without hormones
