X-rays - can someone put my mind at rest?

If you lay down on the x-ray table on your back and by your left ear was a black board and the x-ray machine was positioned so that it was next to your right ear, which side of your skull would be shown on the x-ray image - left or right?

I would have thought the left side. I only think this as DD had an x-ray done of her hips when she was younger and they put the blackboard under her hips. So I assume where the blackboard was, is where they were x-raying.

It would have given an clear image of the right side of the dome of the skull and some of the facial bones.
It could pick up a fracture on the left side though, it depends on the intensity of the radiation
This is a strange one to do on its own its usually done as part of a series (if its for the head.

erm... if the Xray beam was shining straight through from your right ear towards your left ear, where the plate is, it would show both sides of the skull superimposed- the beam has to pass through both sides to get to the plate. This is called a lateral skull Xray, and as chapsmum has said is usually part of a series- they would also take one with you lying on the plate, and the Xray tube firing from in front of you.

anyway- why do you need your mind put at rest?

DS2 has a funny swelling on the left side of his head and had an x-ray. No-one can explain why he has it (seen 4 doctors so far) and everyone is hoping it just goes away. I am generally fairly relaxed about it as his behaviour is normal, but every now and then I get jumpy. Last night I suddenly started thinking "what if they accidentally x-rayed the right side instead of the left?"

Not feeling worried about it today, though!
