Has anyone had gestational diabetes and then developed diabetes?

I had gestational diabetes when pregnant with dd2. She is now 2 year olds and I had some blood tests last week and they have come back high sugar. I am now going for 2 fasting blood test results next week and am quite concerned that I have developed diabetes. I have been very tired the last few weeks and thirsty and also had itchy toes which were terrible during pregnancy. Any others been through this?

I used to work with a lady who had GD when she was pregnant. She went on to develop diabetes later in life.

Sorry, not what you wanted to hear.

you have a 1 in 2 chance of developing diabetes if you have GD...they keep that little statistic well under their hats ime.

It's my reason for low carbing, ...that way of eating suits me, helps keep the excess weight off (when I do it properly) and I think there's plenty of evidence out there about carbs and diabetes.

Hope you get sorted with your results soon.

Yes, had it with DD 10 years ago and then it went away intil I had DS 5 years ago. Mat Unit couldnt test me as my levels were too high post birth (1 week later I think) so was referred back to GP Confused. Finally had the two hour GTT and it came back as just over 11, which was the base line for diabetes. So GP surgery has been 'treating' me for the past 5 years with 6 monthly check-ups and blood tests and so far all is ok with diet control (was on insulin during both pg) with levels hovering between 6 and 6.9. Havent been tested for over a year (long story) so not sure how things are now. Got told the usual lose weight exercise more - well I have been this weight (3 stone overweight) since I was about 20 and go to the gym 3 times a week (classes and gym) so nothing is going to change now, but at least I know why I cant lose weight easily - low carbing is the best for me but hard to stick to.

Hope all works out for you - if you need to know anything else just ask!
