HOW DO YOU FORCE 2Y.O TO TAKE YUKKY MEDICINE?

mrspitt · 04/02/2006 19:05

DD1 is 2 and has a chest infection which the doc prescribed penicillin for yesterday. The problem is after tasting the 1st spoonful and realising how awful it tastes she will not take anymore.

It has to be taken 4 times a day. Have tried forcing it but she made herself sick. Tricked her this morning but she won't fall for it again and i tried putting it in some orange juice earlier but i think she knew cos she wouldn't finish it!

So, what do i do now?????

or bribery - take this medicine and then you can have this chocolate button.

the only think that worked with DS1 when he was ill

WigWamBam · 04/02/2006 19:37

Another vote for bribery here.

dramaqueen72 · 04/02/2006 19:39

absolutely, bribery works. gets dd2 to take medised(which tastes bloody awful) and now the bribery is alot less as times gone on, she tells me its 'ucky med' but will now take it when required.

mrspitt · 04/02/2006 19:41

She's not eating very much just now but might try the yoghurt if she agrees to having one.

Went to boots today and bought nurofen for kids cos you get that syringe thing but she wasn't up for that either, think we've made into such a big deal.
Have tried bribery but she's too smart for 2 , knows what we're up to.
Might have to put it in a bottle of milk or something?!

syringe and bribary!! pretend to give it to favorite toy first i find helps!

mrspitt · 04/02/2006 19:43

She's quite happy to take medised or calpol or cough medicine but dh told her it was calpol this morning then she realised it wasn't so she's having none of it!
Why are they so smart so young?

definately, try to turn it into a game. Make one of her teddys not well, give the teddy medicine and the chocolate buttons for being a goeed ted, the teddy starts to feel better...
Let her give the teddy some medicine to

Oh and chocolate buttons, you cant lose!!

mrspitt · 04/02/2006 19:44

Ahh, not tried the toy thing , that might be good. Give it to her favourite dolly!

OP posts:
chapsmum · 04/02/2006 19:44

Not that I'm saying harm the teddy in anyway, its just pretend. Duck for cover as the cruelty to teddy brigade stampede...

bobbybobbobbingalong · 04/02/2006 19:46

If you mix it into yoghurt take a couple of spoonfuls off first and mix with the meds in a little cup - then you know she is getting it all. If she leaves half a yoghurt you will have no idea.

WigWamBam · 04/02/2006 19:47

It doesn't matter that she knows what you're up to with bribery. She has to know, otherwise there's no point! "Yes, I know the medicine is yukky, but you have to take it if you're going to feel better, and when you've taken it you can have some chocolate to take the taste away". Don't try and hide the fact that you're going to give her medicine - and try not to let her dictate to you whether she's going to have it or not.

chapsmum · 04/02/2006 19:52

Just realised if its penicillin v shes on it does taste absolutely disgusting, I wouldnt take it, not even for chocolate buttons, it has a really bitter orange taste to it... Try hiding the taste, and if she's still not taking it at all, you could speak to the gp and ask for the prescription to be changed to amoxicillin, equally effective for chest infections and tastes much better, good luck!!

mrspitt · 04/02/2006 20:21

Put some in her night time bottle and she's drank the lot!! So will have to do it in the orning aswell at least she'shaving some then.

Thanks chapsmum.
It is very bitter orangey stuff though ds has pencillin for an ear infection and his is banana flavour and he loves it. lol!

Easier said then done WWB cos we tried the whole this will make you better, the doc said etc. She actually eneded up in bed early last night rather than take it so what else can you do , like i said we forced her and she was sick and sobbed all night after that.

frustrating I know but there is a difference between penicillin and penicillin v (other than the flavour). Glad she took it for you. Good luck for tommorrow

Most drugs do not react at all with sugar, and a little does no harm. Worth checking with the doctor orcourse

One antibiotic given to my 2 yo was really amazingly foul. If someone had tried to give it to me, they'd have a fight on their hands. Was bad, not sure I could have forced myself to swallow it.

onefootinthegravy · 06/02/2006 16:14

My dd 2.10 has a really bad chest infection - today the doctor has prescribed amoxicillin - a yellowy fluid - not too bad a taste - my dd has taken it no probs maybe you could ask the doc to give her something else?
My dd has had about 4 of these nasty chest infections in the past and I have found this antibiotic really good and works really quickly too.
