I had a complete natural miscarriage on 13th January, that is 3 weeks ago today. I stopped bleeding about 10 days after and have been taking pregnancy tests repeatedly since then. The trouble is that although extremely faint, these tests are still coming out positive and I am now starting to get concerned that I have some retention of tissue or whatever in there. I have an appointment with a health care assistant for next friday to do another test - what will happen if that is still positive, as that will be 4 weeks after the event? Does anyone know? I really want this to be over.
I am wondering if I should have made the appointment with the doctor to do the test as I don't want the HCA to say it is positive and then me have to wait and extra few days until I can see someone else.

how many weeks were you? i had a mc at 10 weeks and was still getting a faint positive until about 4 weeks later. they offered to give me drugs or a proceduree where they take the remains out (sorry to word it like that), but i choose not to do these and to see what happened. could you possibly be pg again? was there any chance of twins? did they scan you during your mc? i hope it gets sorted soon, it's very very hard to get over a mc.

maybe post this on the conception thread as well. there's more people on there that'll be able to give you advice.

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I had blood tests weekly for 5 weeks at the hospital until my levels went back to normal. I think it is OK - certainly nobody suggested there was a problem with it taking a while. I didn't do any tests at home.

Sorry to hear about your m/c. Could you ask them to do a scan to check that nothing has been retained?

dangirl · 03/02/2006 19:52

Sorry you have to go through this I have been there myself (twice).
It is not unusual to have pos test 4 weeks after and not any cause for concern.
As has been mentioned there may be small amounts of retained tissue still there, which should come out with your next period (which may be a bit later and heavier by the way) so be aware of any infection signs.
If you are really concerned you could request an internal scan where they can check for this.

hope all goes well! Not an easy thing to get through

Rubles again as others have said I am so sorry your going through this.
The hormon that causes the positive is called hcg, this can remain elevated in the body for up to 6 weeks.
It is not an indication of retained tissue.

OK I feel reassured that it is normal now, I didn't know before so my expectations were too high. thanks all.

A further question though - would my AF come approximately 4/6 weeks after the hcg is zero?

thanks again.

It will take time for your cycle to settle and everybody is different. The average length of time untill ovulation is 6-8 weeks following the miscarrage which means your period could be between 8-10 weeks. Don't expect it to return to your normal cycle either.
Give it time. (Its the hardest thing)
Good luck with the future
(also there are some very supportive threads in the conception section that have people in simmilar situations to your self)
