Pain relief after a c-section

Hi All,
I had a c-section last Wednesday and have been regularly taking my wonderful pain relief. However, i've just realised that i've taken my last co-codamol and once this wears off, i'm dreading it!
Does anyone know if it's safe to take paracetamol with Diclofenac which is the other prescription drug i'm taking??
I'm breastfeeding too so don't know if that has a bearing on it.
I'm praying that someone out there will know... i can't believe i didn't realise sooner that i was down to my last tablet!
Thanks in advance,
Womba

Yes, I took paracetamol with Diclofenac, but only for 24 hours. I was scared of stopping pain meds after my section (had a tear, infected wound, etc) but the fear was MUCH worse than the reality - something about those co-codamol that does ones head in, IMO!
Diclofenac is a really powerful painkiller/anti-inflammatory in itself, so if you're still taking those (which I did, for a couple of days after stopping the co-codamol) you should be fine even without paracetamol.
Good luck!

If your c-section was over a week ago, diclofenac should be enough on it's own. Are you in a lot of discomfort?

womba1 · 02/02/2006 18:45

Thanks Elibean... maybe i'll be a big brave girl and just stick with the Diclofenac for now!

Jalopy, i wasn't in pain, but i slipped on the kitchen floor earlier and have really pulled myself. I thought i'd torn my stitches but it all seems ok, i'm just a bit tender.

Diclofenac helps deal with the inflammation, while cocodamol just deals with pain.

That being said: cocodamol is codeine + paracetamol. You can get it OTC, if you really need it. It might be worth taking it at night, to make the pain go away, so you can sleep. If you're not on the cocodamol, then you can have paracetamol. (But cocodamol + paracetamol is bad, as you're having two doses of paracetamol then.)

I loved gas + air. And codeine was fine (still is, if I need it). But morphine, no. Well, I don't know that was what made me throw up, I was in a bad way, but still ...

bundle · 02/02/2006 19:01

i threw up throughout my labour before i had anything

jalopy · 02/02/2006 20:39

Gosh, womba1, are you ok? Last thing you need after a c-section!!!

KristinaM · 02/02/2006 20:49

The Breastfeeding Network has a Drugline which gives information about what drugs you can take when you are Bf

Thanks for all your advice. I'm feeling really crappy and uncomfortable today so i'm going to see if my mw can come out to see me today.... don't think i can wait until tomorrow!

Thanks for your concern Jalopy.. i think i did myself more damage by trying to stop myself falling. Sodding slippers! I never wear them but dh bought me a lovely pair for my stay in hospital... of course he got the full extent of my anger and tears when he got home yesterday!
I had to blame someone!

womba1, sorry to hear about your fall.
Cocodamol did it for me after both sections although I found nurofen also helped.
I HATED morphine, it totally buggered my system

LadySherlockofLGJ · 03/02/2006 11:15

Morphine................mmmmmmmmmmmmmm yummy

katetee · 03/02/2006 12:13

morphine was great but made me itch sooooooo much they had to remove it from me, not without a fight though. Co-codamol made me go all spaced out and wierd, i took one a sat looking in the mirror and watched myself go all funny coloured!! Didn't take it again after that!
Good luck Womba, i had 2 c sections and found the thought of drug free days far worse than the real thing.

I rang my GP when I was running out of pain killers, and they did me a prescription for DH to pick up without even seeing me.

In fact, I was discharged with just paracetamol and codeine, and the MW was so disgusted (I was in agony 12hrs later), that she rang the emergency doc for me and got me a prescription, which again DH just picked up. It might be worth asking your MW to do that for you?

I was on voltarol (is that sodium diclofenac?) for a while, which was great. I used to alternate that with paracetamol, to ensure that the levels never got too low
