Has any one else had this virus that they can't shake off?

We all had a flu type virus over the past 2 weeks, first dh followed by me and then the dd's last week, we all had high fever, cough, feeling dizzy and tired. I keep having a few days where i feel better and then it gets me again, felt fine yesterday and the day before and then last night my glands came up and then today the fever and cough Sad, dd1 has been the same, i send her back to school and then the next day she is rough again and this morning has woke up with a hacking cough and has lost her voice (again).

Starting to feel really fed up with it as we have had 3 weeks of illness (on and off), dh seems to be the only one who has recovered.

Is there anything i can take or do to help us recover ?

My Mum has had this horrible virus for at least ONE MONTH, possibly a bit longer, she is in her 70s - seems to be getting better now though thank God but her cough is still there though her other symptoms have gone. Luckily, DD (11 months), DH and I haven't caught it. There is definitely something going round though - am sure you probably do this already but try to eat extra healthily, take a multivitamin and cut out refined sugar from your diet (cakes, chocolate etc). This last point might sound a bit extreme but the owner of my local healthfood shop told me that sugar v bad for the immune system - I have more or less cut it out and (fingers crossed) have not caught the lurgie yet. Get well soon.

I am told manuka honey v good for killing viruses - it's expensive though about 10 to 15 quid a pot so I buy it very very rarely.

slowburner · 17/03/2012 21:12

Yes. DH and DD have had this, its a nasty nasty virus. DH id 6'6 of strapping healthy bloke and he got knocked for six, spent best part of two weeks in bed managing to return each Monday/Tuesday after a weekend in bed and then off the W/T/F. He is finally better almost a month after catching it. DD is still running a fever and we suspect that she has something else which she has caught while her immune system was trying to fight the first virus.

I got a straight up severe throat infection. Hideous but over in 10 days.

So sorry your dd is so poorly with it TheSecondComing, both of my dd's have been up and down with it (this is the 2nd time dd2 has had it sinse christmas), dd1 doesn't seem to get it as bad but she's still not right and still coughing. my glands have been up and down for weeks and my temp keeps going up and down (and i rarely get a fever). Half of the dd's school have been off with it and many have returned and then been poorly again Sad. I think we need summer/spring to come and case away the bugs, this year seems to have been a bad one Sad. Hope your dd picks up soon xxx

Yes, I seem to have had a cold and cough for maybe 10 days - started with a horrible temperature for two days, then just the usual snot etc etc. both kids have had the same thing, then ds2 got chicken pox on top of it and was quite ill with that.

He's getting better now and we all still have The Cold. It's persistent, I'll give it that.

I hope you all feel better soon Marne x

Mine started mid feb-have just been prescribed antibx by OOH doc who says I have developed a secondary chest infection.

TheCunningStunt · 18/03/2012 18:23

I think I am just shaking this off now. I had a migraine to boot for three days, could barely walk etc. dp had to work do I had to do school runs etc, it wasn't pretty. Today I feel a bit better, blocked nose just. But I still feel utterly wiped. Weird

5inthebed · 18/03/2012 18:30

I've had it since the middle of February, so had it for just over 4 weeks. I've pulled all the muscles betweenmy ribs from coughing so much Sad, I'm in agony and I would lve to feel normal again. the frequent headaches are really getting me down as well.

Nobody else in my immediate family have had it as bad, just a slight cough and cold.

Hope everyone else who has it starts to feel better soon.

SardineJam · 18/03/2012 18:39

I've had a banging congestion headache for over a week now and nothing is shifting it, not even decongestants and poor DS1 was asleep for the whole day for about 5 days!

Just want summer to arrive and blast these bugs away! Been such an unhealthy winter in our house

olivo · 18/03/2012 19:16

I have been ill for nearly 6 weeks - started with a cold, felt dreadful, and now, after 2 lots of antibiotics, sinus and chest infection, I just feel wiped out, snotty and cough from hell. fed up of it.

thegreylady · 18/03/2012 20:03

These all sound so similar it is obviously one nasty virus going the rounds. Has anyone completely recovered and if so how long did it take? It's my birthday this week and was planning a dinner party on Tuesday :(

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 18/03/2012 20:28

DH has had this for a week.

We thought he was getting better but today he has gone backwards and has been in bed for most of the day.

HugADalek · 18/03/2012 20:37

Yes, I have been ill on and off now for three weeks. It was worst during the first week, where I spent most of the week in bed unfit to do anything much at all. Now I keep feeling better for a bit, then really sick again. Been going to bed dead early for a month nearly. Loads of nausea and dizziness and aching joints

kerstina · 18/03/2012 23:06

We had the hacking cough bug too. We have never been ill for so long usually bounced back quicker.Do you think its because the bugs are getting immune to the antibiotics because they have been overused? Very worrying there was a report on it the news the other day.

NightLark · 18/03/2012 23:17

yes. DH really fed up as having to drive rather than cycle commute for weeks now. I have a hacking gunky cough and the DCs have snot taps where their noses used to be. For weeks.

SmileItsSunny · 18/03/2012 23:56

Yes like 5in thebed I also pulled muscles. We were all much better 5 weeks in, but Dh is getting poorly again (he started it originally). Ds had course of antibiotics but now that's finished his cough is coming back.

Marne · 19/03/2012 19:17

Well thought i was feeling better today (went shopping with dh, did some gardening) and now i have the high temp again and bunged up nose Sad. Will this illness ever do one?

Dd1 also woke up without her voice and feeling rough, i sent her into school as she has had so much time off (i need to aske for a week off for holiday and am worried they will say 'no'), she's still coughing and very horse. Felt guilty sending her in as she looks so pale. If she has a bad night tonight i think i will keep her home and maybe take her to the gp.

I heard on the radio that 'soon antibiotics will no longer work as we have overused them and most infections are imune to them, apparently in a few years time a cut to the knee could kill' Shock.

Had that hacking cough thing here too - everyone in work seems to have had it and it seems to take ages to go.

I started last monday, thought I was getting better over the weekend but have woken up today with a sore throat and been coughing all day :(
