I need to take in a urine sample for ds to be tested, but he does'nt have his first wee til about 10.00am, he is almost 5, I have tried getting him up earlier and getting him to drink, but it does'nt work. The sample has to be taken to the gps on a morning. Can I do it the night before or will it be too old, otherwise he will have to have a morning off school, while I wait patiently for him to wee

If I've ever had to get one from my dd the gp has always reqeusted it as new as possible - ie night before wouldn't be any good.
I'm amazed he can hang off to 10 a.m. !

Night before should be fine UNLESS they specifically requested an early morning sample.
Make sure it's in a sterile container (should have given you one at the surgery) and keep it in the fridge overnight.

MrsBadger · 01/02/2006 12:31

ooh, actually, depends what the test is for - assumed it was for UTI (in which case fridge o/n is fine), but if it's for something chemical / hormoney that might not work.

Ring the surgery and ask?

Yes I have the containers, just realised one of them has crystals of some sort in the bottom, test for diabetes and kidney function, do you think that will be k overnight aswell.

probably should be a fresh one then - sorry

Worth asking the surgery though - tbh many urine samples are just chilled at the surgery and sent away to a hospital for testing - if they arrive there after 4pm we just chill them till the next day anyway.

I expect it needs to be fresh then, as I was told I must take it in on a morning, to go for testing that same afternoon.

Thought you could leave it in the fridge overnight??

MrsBadger · 01/02/2006 14:37

Millie - fridge overnight is ok if they're only looking for bacteria (ie trying to diagnose a UTI) as they'll still be there in the morning.

Other tests can get messed up if sample hangs around - compounds in the urine can start breaking down / aggregating etc which can interfere with some tests.

Still not taken the sample in, cant get him to pee in a potty for love nor money.

can you hold sample pot over loo and get him to wee straight into it? Or a clean yoghurt pot (etc) if you're worried about messing up the sample pot.

chapsmum · 04/02/2006 14:46

get a sterile foil bowl from surgery or chemist. Mos household item even when clean could still mess up the sample, except maybe a steralised bottle (you don't want to get that mixed up with the lemonade though!!!)
I find the best way to make them pee really is lots of fluid, whatever he like and standover him making him drink and drink and drink, and he will pee. Make sure you are free, distractions can have disasterous consequences!!!
