13 month old with croup

My daughter has been ill since sunday and on second visit to the doctors she's been diagnosed with croup. Poor love has lost her voice, really bunged up/snotty and has a horrid cough/ wheeziness. She also has high fevers on and off. Any advice from anyone who's been through this? Will she be susceptible to getting croup every time she has a cold now? How long does it last?

Friends' daughter first got croup at around a year (seems to be a typical age). The first time it was quite bad and she needed inhalations to ease it but subsequent attacks seem less acute. She still gets them when she gets a bad cold although she is almost 3 but have heard that this is not always the case.

Best advice I've heard is to try to minimise her congestion (we use a nasal aspirator and saline solution) plus to humidify the air either with a humidifier, wet towels on the radiator or steam in a bathroom during an attack.

Croup is horrible! You have my sympathy! I either wrap a duvet around my child and take it outside. Cold fresh air helps or I steam up the bathroom and put some decongestant drops in the water. Some days when my Ds has been really bad, we have literally spent whole days playing in the bathroom. I really hope your DD feels better very soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is she doing now?
My DD had croup last week. Last tuesday, she was very poorly, so I panicked and rushed her round the doctors as she was breathing weird!
Thankfully she was much better by Friday and she went back to school on Monday. It is very scary, especially the difficulty breathing. I haven't heard children are prone to getting it once they have had croup. I know it is common between 3 months to 5 years. It is usually worse in children up to 3 years.
