Urgent - Infection has set in after surgery what to ask nurse when i go later?

Broke my leg on Boxing day, it wasnt setting in a cast so they have operated to put a large pin in. The wound in about 2 inches long.

  1. the surgeon left a large string in my wound which had to be reopened to get it out by the nurse. This was the top part of the wound.

  2. few days later the lower part started to open up so went back to the nurse to check it out.

  3. she said it looked fine, it got worse.

  4. went back as the wound was getting warm, red and swollen and slgithly bleeding. Was given a prescription for co amoniclav (sp)

  5. it wont stop bleeding and is getting green pus out of it. Changing dressing about 4 times a day.

  6. did have a vomiting bug which is another sympton of mrsa as well as night sweats (im 27 so not menopausal) but i did think it might be a cold if it is this is the worse cold.

I am going back this afternoon and i am going to ask for a mrsa skin swab to be taken. Is there any thing else i need to ask.

Have been taking ab for 3 days i think and have not missed any.

What can i do?

Glad your seeing consultant tommorow.
Bones is something I know a fair bit about, as well as the consequenses of infections.
If I can help with anything else don't be afraid to ask.
Hope thing get better for you soon

Great, you are far from stupid and pathetic.
The key to recovery is to empower people by helping them understand their illness and injury not by making them feel crazy. Hope the consultant is more help

jellyjelly · 26/01/2006 22:38

The latest snippet to this terrible taleis that the dressing that the nurse put on was very fluffy so when i took it off which i had to because the stickieness was failing. Well anyway as i pull it off the top layer of skin came off revealing another foreign body - a very long stitch sbout 1 inch. I am so annoyed as the blood was pouring out. This was after i was told there were no stiches underneath by the consultant.

I am so upset about this and i dont know how many other things i might find if i shouldnt have found any and then i found one and then another.

Would an ultrasound show up foreign objects? what test whould show if there was any left in there?

Hope you get on OK today jelly and the consultant takes this seriously.

foxinsocks · 27/01/2006 11:17

omg jelly - I really hope your consultant's appointment went ok. Have you got someone to go with? Sometimes having support there helps you to get all your points over without crumpling! Hope you are ok.

Next · 27/01/2006 12:22

Bloody hell Jelly - is it the same consultant you are seeing today? I would ask to see another. Get someone who can argue for you to go with you if you don't feel up to it.

Re your treatment by the doctor the other day - wtf???

chapsmum · 27/01/2006 13:50

an ultrasound would shw a fb. you should get a full blood count blood cultures and inflammitory markers cheched. Bloody hell , if you went to a + e you'd get admited for iv antibugs...

Radley · 27/01/2006 16:35

How did it go today Jelly?

jellyjelly · 29/01/2006 13:51

Hi everyone, I went to see the consultant who took out the internal stich he did tell me the name but i have forgotten it. It was to seal the lower layers of skin together which appear to have healed nicely but they do think i could have an allergy as my body seems to be trying to get rid of it.

I had new xray and they seem good, i have to go back next friday to check my wound.

Things were begining to look good till friday evening when i fell up the stairs and fell on my bad leg making me have to go back to a and e to be re xrayed. My neighbours are having a right laugh at my expense! all i seem to be doing is getting carted away in ambulances.

I didnt do anything serious i just pulled the ligaments/tendons and my very deflated leg muscle.

Will let you know if anything else happens.

that sounds better jelly jelly, was about to give your gp a piece of my mind.

Hope you continue to feel better, give us a wee shout if you need anything else!!

Simplyred · 30/01/2006 17:51

Oh you poor thing!

Any wound can not heal as you'll know with a foreign object in.

Hope its healing now.

I had mrsa in my c-section scar - All settled down now after a combination of antibiotics.

jellyjelly · 31/01/2006 09:00

Still waiting for any results of the swab. Do you know how long it takes to grow any bacteria?

OP posts:
Radley · 02/02/2006 09:00

.

chapsmum · 02/02/2006 09:07

hey jelly, how you getting on?
Some bacteria can take up to a week but you sould have some by now...

jellyjelly · 02/02/2006 09:21

I am doing pretty well now that the stiches have been removed. The scar line is very red and a bit swollen but the bottom infected part has calmed down so much and i might even be able to have a nice long soak in the bath and pamper myself. I still think i have a very small part of stich as it is very black but it is uncomfortable at the moment.

chapsmum · 02/02/2006 21:24

Great to hear that your doing better, keep an eye on that stitch... hopefully mobilisation will help improve the circulation and speed up the healing process when your ready!
Good luck with things jelly

jellyjelly · 03/02/2006 19:40

I went today and go the all clear for my wound, it is healing really well now and i was told to weight bear 2 stone now and i can drive the car again. I dont quite know how i can manage the verge at the side of my house but it is good news all the same.

Great jelly, what a turn around.
Hope everything continues to get better. give me a shout if I can help again..

Longlegs1972 · 16/02/2006 12:42

Jelly, did you get this infection sorted? I had V similar situation with my wrist - hosp did not do anything much re the infection and 3 years later I ended up with a bone infection.... really nasty andmade me very ill. Hope you got sorted!

jellyjelly · 16/02/2006 19:20

The wound has healed the last couple of days, i still think that there is a very small bit of stitch under as it felt like it did when the other bits where there and it is very dark and not lookinglike blood.

I still havent received the test results even though i am chasing for them.

I have a hospital appointment tomorrow to check how everything is as i have been putting 2 stone of weight on my leg for the last 2 weeks and it hurts alot.

What were the symptons of it going to bone infection? just so i know what to watch for.

Longlegs1972 · 16/02/2006 19:28

Be careful!! I thought I had tendonitis or something, but it started to swell a bit over the area that had broken and was hot. I left it for a couple of weeks due to misdiagnosis from the doc. Wasn't until I started feeling really ill, sick, feverish etc that I saw the doc and was sent to hospital. They admitted me there and then and put me on IV antibiotics, had op next day and now have a chunk of bone missing from top of my wrist. Apparently when they did the tests on the infection it turned out to be Strep. Am still in 2 minds over whether to sue or not as they never treated the infection the first time round when I had it pinned. Also broke my leg and had that plated so know exactly how you are feeling!!! Leg is easier to deal with than arm, howver I didn;t have a baby at the time. The antibiotics they put me on after my wrist op must have done something cos thats when I concieved my son, always been told I was infertile....every cloud and all that!
