It sort of depends what you mean by pain, and what you mean by a lump.... Do you think you have an infection? It would be achy and hot feeling, and you might feel generally rough. If it's that sort of pain, then it's likely an infection and you'll need an antibiotic.

OTOH if it's getting better and just feels "bashed" then less likely.... I had a funny sharp bit (part of the lining of the socket I think) come away and out through the surface. But it was a small lump and a sharp area of pain. Not achy.

its really the latter! Ive struggled, my jaw and cheekbone have been throbbing and achey, and I had a funny taste in my mouth, but that seems to have eased now. but now this has happened.

I'd give it a day or two and see if something sharp works its way out - I was worried it was a chunk of tooth that had got left, but apparently it's not unusual to have little sharp bits from just round the edge, they mostly get reabsorbed but some decide to work loose instead.

I've had quite a few sharp bits come out, like grit. I didn't have a stitch though. That could be it. It bloody hurts.
