Basically I have had a virus since Christmas week that has been up to all the usual stuff a nasty virus does at this time of year (cold, cough, sore throat, tonsilitis, ear ache and then bronchitis). I have had antibiotics , an inhaler and steroids which have got rid of most of my problems but one distressing problem remains. From Jan 16th to today, If I let my throat dry out I choke and can not breath for around 30 seconds to a min. The doctor says my larynx is in spasm due to all the mucus and crap the virus has generated and that this will stop as soon as my body gets on top of it (the virus). Before the steroids I was choking 8 or 9 times a day plus 3 or 4 at night. Now I am just doing it 1 or 2 times at night and have stopped in the day unless I have a coughing ft.
I last saw my G.P 3 weeks ago when she said she expected I'd be better in around 2 weeks. I see her again on Wednesday and want to know what I can do if she just wants to pack me off again to 'get better in time'. Trying to stay positive but waking up from your sleep gasping for breath is quite distressing, even though I know the spasm will pass and that it is not life threatening - The doctor says the worst that will happen is that I wont breath for 2 mins (at which point I'll black out, relax and start breathing).
Do I have the right to be referred to an ear/nose/throat type doctor or do I just have to go along with what my doctor wants?
