Another single jabs thread ... why does my daughter need a mumps jab?

We are considering our options right now, dd is 14 months. We will have a singel measles jab, and the rubella one but I cant understand why she needs the mumps one. Anyone have any ideas?

Herd immunity? Same reason boys "need" a rubella one?

foundintranslation · 22/01/2006 16:40

I think in rare cases mumps can cause problems with feale as well as male fertility. (And of course it wouldn't be nice if she gave it to an unvaccinated boy/man and theyhad problems because of it - the rubella argument in reverse, I suppose).

well, my brother was hospitalised for a week with mumps encephalitis, I got chronic fatigue after it and spent about a year off school afterwards (I was 11, my brother was 9 when we got it)so I guess those might be reasons why you might choose to vaccinate against it. I'd be keen anyway.
then again, I guess we were pretty unlucky.
are you not really keen to give that vaccine for any particular reason?

jetlagdZebra · 22/01/2006 16:43

In rare cases mumps can cause some kind of brain problem (swelling? or just leaving immune system open to other, worse maladies). I know in worse cases it can be a complicating factor causing death (even in girls, even in little children).

Also, not being vax increases chance that your child will give mumps to someone who could take it very badly.

Herd immunity, mumps can also be the cause of viral meningitis

bunny3 · 22/01/2006 16:59

I had no idea meningitis could be caused by mumps or that mumps can kill. Dd is probably ahving single jabs and having read some peoples experiences of obtaining a mumps one, I just wondered if she really needs it. thank you

I have a hearing problem which was noticed after I'd had mumps very badly. Possible, if rare, link.
