DS1 has been to A&E today, he has had very high temps, and has been diagnosed with an inner ear infection...

I dont know if this is linked but it is cause him pain..

His testicles are red and very tender, I have just put a nappy on him for bed and my fingers just brushed them and he flinched and cried out that it hurt. They are very hot (his temp atm is 103) but extreamly tender. He said it doesnt hurt when he wees but hurts to sit, lie down and roll over,

whats causing the pain?? What can I do?? He has been having calpol to reduce temp but it doesnt seem to be helping ease the pain in his testicles.

Sorry missed your last post. Go if thats what you feel you need to do. Hope they don't keep you waiting too long and that DS feels much better soon.

getbakainyourjimjams · 21/01/2006 23:18

Ha ha flossam- my mother is a nurse and I've ended up like her.

soapbox · 21/01/2006 23:20

Do you really think A&E is warranted for Mumps? On a saturday night with all the drunks too!

I may be a little laid back but I really would only go to A&E at this time of night for something serious.

I'd dose up with nuerofen on top of hte calpol he's already had, sponge down his balls and leave him til the morning!

soapbox · 21/01/2006 23:20

Oops - took too long to post - floss and Jimjams got their before me

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:21

I am still here as the doctor called me back, I told her I was going to A&E and she said to wait here and someone else would call me????

So I finally got through to my out of hours doctor, who also said he will call me back. He said if it is mumps then the ear pain would be a cause for concern.

Jonathan has fallen asleep and temp is still high.

They said it shouldnt take long for the doc to call me back and that it was better to wait as if they thought i needed to go in i would be seen quicker coming through them than going to A&E (pub kicking out time)

so now I am neither here nor there.

starlover · 21/01/2006 23:22

if it was a normal, obvious case of mumps then i wouldn't

but in this case it isn't clear cut, he has other symptoms... and the possibilities of the testicle thingy are quite serious...

i think you're justified in going to a&e

LeftOverTurkey · 21/01/2006 23:22

I would still go to A&E, that's what they are there for.
Mumps is nothing to worry about for most people it is true, but the complications must be serious enough to warrant immunisation. And ears and testicles are too important to take a risk with.

SatinesSecretSwapper · 21/01/2006 23:24

If it is mumps then no, I would not go to A&E, but up to now it was not ticking any of my boxes.

Tamba, possibly you need to do what I do in these situations, put him to bed, ( I know he is already there) and sleep on the floor next to him.

Flossam · 21/01/2006 23:25

If he has had his MMR it should only be a milder case of it. If the doctor is on thei way, wait for them. It is true that it will be much quicker and if big big if he did need to go to hospital, he would be treated quicker in all liklehood as a GP referral.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 21/01/2006 23:26

The first one to tell Satine, is dead.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:27

Hes in my bed and I am on the PC in the bedroom.

I hope the doc hurries up and calls. Although in half an hour I can get dh home from work to watch Michael and get a lift to and from the hospital. (I would bet that the out of hours doc tells us to go to there unit at the hospital, they usually do)

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:28

I think he has had his MMR (but seem to recall there was the big debate about it around the time he was due it, I know ds2 hasnt had it yet, but im pretty sure ds1 has, yes i definatly think he has)

Goodnight and God Bless.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:51

Night xxxx

I am being told off by the doctor for not having Ibuprofin in my house (nhs doc) he says that I ought to go and get some now - from where exactly??? And that I should take him out of my bed. And that I shouldnt take this lightly - like I am??!! He took it at my word though that I thought it was mumps. Symptoms fit.

He said that there can be complications like swelling of the brain, so I said right i'll go to A&E, he said theres no point as they cant treat it. So I just have to take my chances with the complications then???

Out of hours doc hasnt called back yet, but I have had enough. I am calling DH and going to A&E.

OP posts:
misdee · 21/01/2006 23:52

hope he gets better soon tamba. is dh back yet?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 22/01/2006 00:03

cant get hold of dh now - its not my night tonight!!

OP posts:
LeftOverTurkey · 22/01/2006 00:07

Ibuprofen from A&E pharmacy, of course!!

Mumps still needs to be confirmed, so better get to A&E in case it turns out to something different and more treatable.

It is a while since my boys were small but I remember the agonies of deciding whether or not to call the doctor, so am thinking of you. Hope it gets sorted soon.

xx

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 22/01/2006 00:14

Finally got hold of dh

He is on his way home full of sympathy for ds1 (of course I know nothing of pain...real pain is testicle.. never mind that ive been through child birth ) He will watch ds2 whilst I take ds1 to be checked.

Question though - although mumps may be mild in ds1 as he has had his MMR, how likey is it that his brother will get it (who hasnt had his mmr) and will it be a more serious case? And is it too late to get him jabbed?

Tamba, sorry I only just caught this thread.
I have my sis n hers over for the weekend and have had a bottle of wine so I cant drive
try not to worry too much. his temp is not too high,40 is when it starts to get cause for concern. If it is mumps then he will recover in a few days but will feel very poorly.
keep checking his temp keep him cool and make sure you keep up the fluids.

If he gets worse then get back ont to nhs direct, they can sort out transport if he really needs it.

Sorry I cant be of more help.
All you can do is keep an eye on him, reassure him and act if things get worse.
Chances are he will hover like this temp wise and gradually get better.

((((((hugs)))))

Aloha · 22/01/2006 00:16

Mumps can feel horrid, but it really isn't a serious disease in the vast, vast majority of cases (to put it in perspective, chickenpox can kill, but we don't tend to worry about that). There is no treatment except to keep the temperature down and deal with the pain. And now he will be immune, so better to get it young.

Aloha · 22/01/2006 00:17

Obviously it's horrid for your little boy and I hope he gets better soon.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 22/01/2006 00:19

Hello Carl

Dh is on his way home. The doc said normally they wouldnt be to worried about mumps (if it is mumps) but because he has an ear infection he needs to be seen as a complication of it can lead to hearing problems.

Have you had mumps BTW? I dont know if it is catching etc but you were around him the other day so worth thinking about... so sorry if we've infected you!

I wish id had a bottle of red!

Your thermomiter is so helpful btw! I would be lost without is as all the docs keep asking is what he temp is!

((( hugs )))

OP posts:
Carlk · 22/01/2006 00:28

Yes I had mumps and your dh is right child birth is a mere itch compared to swollen testes
I know its a mothers job to worry but as Aloha said its mostly not that serious compared to other childhood diseases.
I know you are worried about the ear infection but his ear may well hurt because of the glands in the neck near the ear.
