DS1 has been to A&E today, he has had very high temps, and has been diagnosed with an inner ear infection...

I dont know if this is linked but it is cause him pain..

His testicles are red and very tender, I have just put a nappy on him for bed and my fingers just brushed them and he flinched and cried out that it hurt. They are very hot (his temp atm is 103) but extreamly tender. He said it doesnt hurt when he wees but hurts to sit, lie down and roll over,

whats causing the pain?? What can I do?? He has been having calpol to reduce temp but it doesnt seem to be helping ease the pain in his testicles.

Hi floss,

He 3.5, temp is 39.

He had calpol about and hour and a bit ago.

Hes drinking blackcurernt squash, Hes only had one wee today but has been like that for a little while now (not weeing much i mean) He says its inside his testicles that hurt.

He should be weeing more than once a day. How much is he drinking? How much does he pass when he wees? Is it dark in colour or light. Is there any odour? He could have a UTI. Was the temp before or after you gave the calpol?

starlover · 21/01/2006 22:58

oh
get on the phone to your mum!

Surfermum · 21/01/2006 23:01

If I couldn't get hold of a doctor I think I would phone A&E directly, explain he was seen there earlier so they can access his notes if need be, and ask them if he needs to be brought back in to be seen.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:02

He had temp before calpol (i gave him the calpol when i noticed temp) he has been going between high temps and clammy all day.

The doc said his wee looked fine (although didnt test it) he does long wees but seems to have to push them out iykwim, light in colour. The triarge nurse said that his stomach felt a bit hard, but it softened after he did a wee.

I havent smelt an odour, but he has been having accidents over the last week (he has been toilet trained for over a year so this is rare) weeing in the eveing onto the floor.

It is light in colour, he is drinking as normal.

Been trying to call my mom but no answer, maybe she is in bed! hope not!

Well,....... I am just a hysterical Mummy at times, but I would be very very close to calling an Ambulance.

getbakainyourjimjams · 21/01/2006 23:02

Mumps??? Does he have a sore throat? (the glands in the testicles can swell with mumps).

LadySherlockofLGJ · 21/01/2006 23:03

Is this the same DS who was not responding to you yesterday ??

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:04

doc said his throat looked sore jimjams and also his ear.

Calling my mom again to have Michael and going to A&E

LeftOverTurkey · 21/01/2006 23:04

Mumps?
Think you should get to A&E.
I once got told off by the doc for not calling him sooner when ds was ill.

nutcracker · 21/01/2006 23:05

Ooops sorry xposted.

Hope he is ok, poor thing.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 21/01/2006 23:06

At this stage via .......999

Sorry. but I would, you must have a neighbour who can come and sit with DS2.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:07

Tamba, we had our baby DS in A&E recently (sent there by NHS direct) for wheezing/croup, he was fine in the end but they were checking his testicles for swelling as apparently it can be a sign of various things (don't know what as his were OK). That makes me think they would only think you were sensible if you took him in.

starlover · 21/01/2006 23:08

There is no cure for mumps, so any treatment deals with symptoms. The body heals itself by producing antibodies to the virus. This provides immunity for the rest of the person?s life; repeat infection is very rare.

People with mumps should drink plenty of cool fluids, especially water.

Avoid fruit juice because it stimulates saliva production, which can be painful.

A mild painkiller will help to reduce pain and mild fever.

It may be soothing to hold a warm flannel against the swollen glands.

Adolescent boys and men who have severe inflammation of the testes (orchitis) may be prescribed a stronger painkiller, or steroid drugs called corticosteroids.

starlover · 21/01/2006 23:08

so try getting him to take water instead of juice.

starlover · 21/01/2006 23:09

Most cases of mumps are mild, but when complications occur they can be serious.

About 1 in 4 adolescent boys or adult men with mumps develop an inflammation of one or both testes (orchitis). This inflammation can be very painful and if it affects both testes, there is some evidence to suggest it may lead to sterility.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 21/01/2006 23:09

Another rare complication of mumps is deafness in one ear, but this only happens in around one in 15,000 cases.

from the mumps page... fits in with his swollen ear.

I am off to A&E. Got to take both boys (grrrr at mother)

Good. I have never been told I've wasted a doctor's time. They've always told me that if I am worried to get the child seen. Hope he's OK.

snowleopard · 21/01/2006 23:12

Take care Tamba, hope it's all OK.

Flossam · 21/01/2006 23:16

I would probably wait untill the morning,IMO, but I am a bit too chilled about these things. DS had a temp of 39.5 once, so I just gave him some calpol and water and put him back to bed! He hasn't ever been really poorly yet though, to be fair. I am turning into my mother already, sympathetic at work, couldn't care less at home!

getbakainyourjimjams · 21/01/2006 23:16

I wouldn't go to A and E for mumps (especially not for a young child), but I might go if I wasn't sure that it was mumps if that makes sense. Cheeks are usually fairly obviously swollen with mumps. Do you have an out of hours doctor you can call for advice, they're usually more sensible than NHS direct.

have you given an antiinflammatory such as ibuprofen - will be better than calpol if there is swelling.
