He's not that unwell, generally going about his usual business, but it's not pleasant to listen to and he's coughed himself sick a couple of times.

He's usually a very good eater and he's a bit off his food. He is eating, but much less than usual and has been for the last week or so. What do you think?

How is he today? Generally I wouldn't take DCs to the doctor if they're going about their business OK but if he's coughed himself sick then that does sound quite nasty so I think I probably would if he's been like that for a week.

It's always best to check it's not a chest infection, but doesn't sound like one...still, I'd take him (depends on age how long I'd leave it Grin) - in, out, shake it all about. A quick appointment.

Thanks. He's Okish thanks. Sill didn't eat well, but did eat something.

The cough sounds awful though and he's very tired. Age 10.

A couple of weeks? Wouldn't necessarily worry if it was a chest infection as these are self limiting and don't need antibiotics so would just keep an eye on him, check he rests if needed and takes plenty of fluid.

Coughs can go on for ages and still be nothing more than the tail end of a virus. Do what stitching recommends - plenty of warm (not hot) fluids, put honey in if that helps him drink more. You could ask at the chemist if there's any cough sweets he's allowed at that age - when I have a bad cough I take the medicated ones (with lidocaine?) that numb the throat, but I'm not sure they're OK for kids. (Caveat: I don't live in the UK so don't know what's available). I would possibly go to a doctor if he were coughing so hard it was leading to vomiting or other secondary symptoms, or if it lasted longer than 2/3 weeks, but I'm not sure a doctor would actually be able to do anything useful.
