Burst blood vessel in thumb? (at least I think thats what it is?) Anyone had this happen or know anything about it?

Last week and again today I appear to have burst a blood vessel in my thumb.

I wasn't doing anything in particular (but was using my hands) and it just felt strange (bit tingly/numb/throbbing) and then bruising appeared very suddenly and it swelled up slightly.

It is now a lovely shade of purple/blue/dark grey around the inner joint halfway up the thumb and feels a bit sore/bruised.

It happened to me years ago and I vaguely remember the doctor saying it was a burst blood vessel but don't remember anything else.

Anyone know what causes it to happen? How it can be avoided? Should I be worried? Is it connected to anything else (eg Reynaulds?)?

Thanks

Croissant, I get this now and again. A sudden sore trobbing feeling and then a bruise. Gave me a fright first time i got it! Generally in the joint of a finger. Bruise disappears in a few days. Nothing to worry about!

Thanks for replying Tilly.

Its just such a pain as my thumb is quite swollen so I can't bend it properly.

I was hoping there was some way of avoiding it happening

Sorry for the zombie thread opening but this is the most relevant thing I've found after searching for it, mine is the exact same as op, inner joint around my thumb, happened several times over the past month or two, did you ever find out more about it croissants or just leave it?

I burst the blood vein in my thumb a couple of weeks ago, no big deal, but it seems to re-injure every few days with hardly any effort. Any idea on how long it will take to finally heal? Does it need wrapping do prevent constant re-breaking?

Glad I found this thread because medical websites don't mention this sort of thing and I didn't know if others also experienced it. I occasionally get bruises on the bottom inner joint of my fourth finger but tonight it's on the outer side. The blood vessels around there must have a weakness.
To try to reduce the swelling and soreness, as soon as I feel the 'pinging' sensation I hold my hand up in the air for five minutes or so, to get the blood draining away from the bleed.

Achenbach syndrome!

I got this once and did extensive googling. Don’t think there’s much else to it but I like to put a name to a face as it were.

Thank you Funbun. Your Googling was more successful than mine. It's nice to know it is recognised as benign by the medical profession!

I wonder if it's linked to varicose veins - which I've had since having children.
