Ongoing dry cough - what to take

Billwoody · 11/01/2012 22:20

Have had an irritating dry cough for about a week now. This follows a cold that started before Christmas but that never really went anywhere. Sore throat one day, runny nose the next, glands up the next but nothing at the same time iyswim.
Have been taking dry cough medicine but the cough is not improving, nor does the medicine seem to alleviate it - especially at night.
Would be grateful for any advice.

Try pulmo bailly. Ask for it in boots. It is totally rank, think drinking tcp, but does the trick in minutes!

Could be post nasal drip. Get some spray called Sterimar Hypertonic (boots) it will but moisture back into the nasal passages and also protect you from getting more colds - it does work.

No medicine will stop a cough complete waste of money. Night time is worse as the air is dry and through lying down. Could take Gavison too to stop any acid rising at night as this can cause sore throat especially from being unwell.

Forgot to add - Also gargle with salt water solution or spray the nasal stuff into the throat. This will add moisture. Make sure the bedroom has humidity, open windows and put damp towel on radiator.

Also watch your diet, cut the sugar and carbs down. Eat lots of warm slowly cooked dishes as your body needs a boost.

With being indoors over christmas, heating, any sudafed stuff it all dries up you tubes and yr in a vicious circle. Try not spray too many artificial cold remedies up your nose or room freshners either.

A long walk over the weekend my be beneficial even when you feel terrible you def feel better when you get back.

Thanks Rachy and Bacon - will try the vile stuff and the spray. I do seem to get a very dry feeling down my throat and something catches when I breathe starting me coughing again. It is worse when lying down.
I am generally very healthy, going to the gym and walking my dogs - that said have had to cancel latest gym visit owing to having to stop last time as was coughing so much!
