DD's nursery told me yesterday that there was an out break of hand, foot and mouth at the nursery.
Today she has been whingy, she seems hot and she has tiny little red spots on her face and hands, but they are not blisters.

Sounds like it to me. The spots stay pretty small and look like very small chickenpox spots when they blister. Look inside her mouth and see if she has any spots or ulcers there.

DS2 had this and was very mildly unwell - not even off his food, despite the mouth sores. As well as hands, feet and mouth, he had a few spots round his bum and a low-grade fever.

That's what dd has. She is only a wee bit of colour though. How long does it last?
