how accurate are waist to hip ratio calculators

I am a it confused, I class myself as an average build female but others class me as slim. I am generally 14 on top with a 36D bust and a 12/14 in jeans trousers. Loads of my friends diet and do really well I often mention losing at few pounds but people say I would be a stick insect and certainly don't need to lose weight. I am 5 ft 7 and weigh 10st 2 which apparently is a healthy BMI, but I am now really scared as I just did a waist to hip ratio measuement and I come up with 0.9 which is classed obese. When I measure my waist it comes up as 34in which is apparently a size 16 but I have never worn a 16 and have just tried a pair of a friends on and they are huge on me!!

How accurate are these calculators and do I need to worry!!! I was breastfeeding up until last yr and was very thin and dropped to 8st have put on 2 stone since stopping but I think I look and feel better for it. Before having children I was a size 10 to 12 so have definitely put weight on!!

Are you measuring your waist - the narrowest part of your torso - as opposed to the waistband of your trousers?

My practice nurse does this - thinks my waist is about an inch above my hips because that's where my jeans waistband is - and I get a skewed result.

You sound anything but obese! These ratios can be as crap as BMI for some people, anyway.

The general advice is that women are at much greater risk if their waist is over 32 inches and men's over 37 inches.

your waist is around or just above your belly button.
