My mum has been burping a lot for quite a while and this morning she told me her friend told her this could be a sign or a hernia but didnt give her any more info about it - is she just talking rubbish and scaring her (and me) ?????

Errr, too much wind? Just a guess like!

JenumGeranium · 12/01/2006 13:50

I have never heard of it being a sign of a hernia before.

Thank you for reply - like I say her friend probably talking rubbish, its just when someone tells you something like that you get a strange worried feeling just incase they are right.

This might be misconstrued, but I've never known an old person to be right on issues of health, especially their own!

ha, ha, ta rhubarb think you might be right!

Your mum's friend was probably talking about a hiatus hernia, some info about it here . Burping can be one of the symptoms, but it's just as likely to be excess wind, particularly if she hasn't got any other symptoms like reflux or heartburn. Although that said, sometimes there are no symptoms at all.

If your mother is concerned, get her to see the GP.

WWB thanks very much, I'll go have a read through this info. My first reaction when mum told me was for her to go to docs to get checked just incase but I would have been as hitting head off brick wall for all notice she took.
