breast pain/leaking/nausea. Any ideas what this is?

I am female mid thirties. on contraceptive implant (not sure if relevant but worth mentioning) for 1 yr approx. non-smoker, light-moderate alcohol drinker.

left breast hurts/aches/feels heavy underneath/to the side/towards the nipple. Feels a bit like let-down/mastitis pain (or maybe not so severe), some slight occasional stabbing. I feel sick which comes and goes in waves and at the weekend I vomitted. my breast leaks a little with what appears to be milk, and when the pain is the most severe/feeling is most heavy. Right breast is fine.

Started about a week ago, building up. Now ache is constant and pain comes and goes.

About a month ago, I had this, not much breast ache, but coinciding what I thought was a stomach bug for over a week, I had milk leakage. It went away as did the sickness.

Had slight raised temp over the last couple of days, but could be a hot flush?!

neausea and sickness is very much like morning sickness.

No lumps. Maybe a little more swollen than normal, but not much. I thought I had just changed boob sizes!

Is this hormonal? could it be the menopause?!

Poor you, sounds horrible Sad

I do have a friend who got pregnant on the contraceptive implant. Have you POAS?

Northernlurker · 13/12/2011 18:17

You need to see a doctor. Changes in breasts should always be checked and you probably need a pregnancy test as well.

I had similar problems when I stopped taking the pill plus migraines and my hair started falling out. I had raised prolactin levels so my body was acting like I had just had a baby. It sorted itself out after a few months and they think was related to the pill. My GP was really good, he did a breast exam and got a blood test done within a couple of days and sent me for a special eye exam to rule out anything sinister. I hope you get it sorted.

frilly, my hair has thinned, although not fallen out completely, it is quite short and still I have lots of it when I run my hand through my hair. Had a blood test a few months ago due to excess tiredness, all was ok...I get mood swings, but I have a son who is not a great sleeper so have put this down entirely to lack of sleep...

Northern I know, I should, but I just don't find the time, I have to feel really sick to get to the gp. But you are right, I should go.

pushme not POAS. But. I don't feel pregnant. I have two children and i had severe HG in both of these from early on. I am pretty certain I am not pg, but obviously not 100% as nothing is certain when you have sex once in a blue moon Grin.

pushme it is not awful so much, as bugging me, and I am a bit nervous that I might be starting the menopause a bit early, perhaps due to the implant, as that has stopped my periods, and I wondered if that has knocked my hormones out or something. It would explain the leaky boob which I did not even have when I breastfed both my children!!

When I had the blood test the GP asked for certain things to be tested that aren't standard including prolactin. It may be that they just did a routine blood test for you last time, possibly concentrating on possible aneamia if your problem was tiredness?

AristoKat · 13/12/2011 18:46

frilly yes they did iron/liver/thyroid/some other stuff, but yes standard i think. I will go and see gp this week if I can find the time!

It will be just my luck to be hormonal like the menopause, I already have a ton of grey hair and feel older than my years...!

I do have a leaky boob from time to time, even pre-pregnancy when there was no conceivable sensible reason for it. Was described as 'one of those things' by my GP. I was only in my early twenties and have had 2 DC since then so not the menopause in my case.

I wouldn't have thought that the implant could trigger early menopause - wouldn't it be more likely to delay it if anything as it's hormone based. Wouldn't be surprised if it was a reaction to the implant though as it does sound hormonal. I would think that if this is the case it will stop if you have it taken out

Possibly a breast infection, get yourself to the doctors. I started off like that and have been diagnosed with periductal mastitis and am now on second week of antibiotics and have a further 2 weeks worth as well.

AristoKat · 19/12/2011 11:14

saw gp, after throwing up at weekend again, and more milk discharge. However by the time I saw her today, I am also sick with coughing bug so threw up more because of the cough (i think, maybe not).

She initially appeared a little concerned, for her, she is normally pretty whatever/get over it type of GP but her face was all very serious as I discussed my symptoms.

However, she checked both breasts and said she felt nothing immediately sinister. She asked me to closely monitor for two weeks and if symptoms continue, I need to go back straight away for some blood tests. I think the reasons for not doing the tests this week were motivated by the horrendous number of people in the waiting room coughing and spluttering! So, I am taking the lack of urgency as a good sign.

She gave me no indication of what it could be. I said I thought it might be related to implant (left arm, same side as breast pain) or something hormonal and she did not say either way if she thought this was possible.

She did hower give me a thorough check, i thought due to me coughing, but she was very thorough with her checking my breathing, checked my ribcage, stomach, glands. Never normally does that when I am sick! And more thorough than with DS who was with me due to having same bug!

Will just have to wait and see.
