Recurring hand foot and mouth in adults?

I had HF&M a couple of weeks ago - got sore throat, generally feeling rubbish and then ten days of spectacular and agonising mouth ulcers. They went, I felt better.

I have just had another dreadful sore throat and feel rubbish. I am back up to 14 mouth ulcers - not as bad as the original but I'm on strong painkillers/antiinflammatories for a slipped disc.

My mum has had almost exactly the same things at the same time.

Assuming you can get HF&M more than once, does anyone have any idea of how many times and how frequently - and whether we can do anything to prevent it, please? I am prone to mouth ulcers normally but these are something else. On the plus side, my baby weight is fast disappearing as I can't eat. DD had it and was fine, btw!

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

I thought it was only once usually. You might like to get checked.

When my DS had HFM the GP told me it could recur, but that subsequent bouts would normally be milder, and that most adults might not even notice having it. Are you sure your new illness is HFM again? You might just be getting the ulcers because you are run down. Do you have any spots on your hands and feet?

I don't think there is much to prevent it BTW, sorry, but general hygiene is probably important as when DS had it the GP said that he would still be shedding the virus in his faeces for a couple of weeks after the symptoms had cleared up.
