Anyone had blood in their stools that turned out to be nothing scarey?

For a few weeks I have noticed blood in my stools when I have been to the loo. It isn't all the time, just the odd time. It isn't on wiping but actually in the stool (sorry for tmi).

I actually thought it could be to do with food - sometimes I could relate to eating 'red' foods (eg tomato, peppers etc) and dismissed it as that but it is now playing on my mind as it is still happening.

Today it was there again. I am going to go and see my doctor but in the meantime has anyone experienced anything like this? I am also petrified of any tests that involve sticking things up my bum Blush

No other changes in bowel movements.

What colour? Bright red/dark red/black?

If its bright red and on the outside of the stool, then its likely to be a little tear which is bleeding, and that's probably not anything too scary.

If its darker blood, or its all through the stool, that's more likely to be something wrong further up your digestive system, which will take more checking out.

Chances are the doc would ask you to provide a stool sample to go to the lab and be checked out, and wouldn't go poking up there until the results from that come back and has narrowed down what its likely to be.

Hope that helps a little. You do need to see the doc though, just to be sure, as its akways better to get things checked out sooner rather than later.

Yes I've had this and it turned out to be nothing scary (piles) but you are right to go to the doctors just in case.

They look up people's bums all the time. Just grit your teeth and get it over!

Hope it all turns out to be 'nothing' but definitely worth going.

It is bright red and kind of woven into my poo, not mucus or anything just in solid poo.

It couldn't be food could it? (clutching at straws)

I don't think its a tear or piles because there isn't any blood in the water in the loo or when I wipe, it is just in the poo.

beetroot?

musicmalady · 28/11/2011 12:02

avoid red peppers beetroot tinned toms and see if still there after 2 days

RichTeaAreCrap · 28/11/2011 12:45

It's not beetroot - I did have fresh tomato yesterday but it had no skin on and was almost pureed.

If its in the poo, and not when you wipe, its more likely to be internal piles than a tear. Internal piles can be further up, so blood could get 'tangled' (!) in the poo, iyswim.

Do go and get checked out - absolutely the right thing to do with any bleeding. But remember that the odds are very much on your side that it will be nothing serious.
