When can I expect my antibiotics to start working?! (Infected wisdom tooth)

I started taking antibiotics on Saturday morning for an infected wisdom tooth. I am also taking ibuprofen, but when the ibuprofen wears off, the pain seems the same. I'm worried the antibiotics aren't working - shouldn't I be feeling an improvement by now? The pain is going along my jaw and into my ear. Any thoughts?!

48 hours so sometine today you should feel an improvement. Toothache is a bastard though. You can have paracetamol ias well as ibuprofen to top up the painrelief.

Thanks. I'm trying hard not to overdo the pain relief as am still BFing my 5mo. I know it's all ok to take, I just don't want to go overboard. You're right, though - it is a bastard! Never had it before so this is a delightful new experience!

Oh ok, been there! You can still take the paracetamol with the ibuprofen though. It won't affect your milk and you will be a bit more comfortable. Hope the antibiotics kick in soon.

Thank you!

The antibiotics don't know where to go in your body so they have to build up to a "therapeutic level" all over your body. 48 hours should be enough. Might be worth thinking about getthing it/them removed though as relying on antibiotics and painkillers isn't ideal as you well know!!

MrsHollyandtheIvy · 29/11/2011 12:44

I'm going to speak to my dentist about that, Grumpy. I still have my maternity exemption for the next seven months, so if I'm going to have done, sooner would be better than later!!!

Hi, it is horrible but antibiotics should kick in soon. Also recommend Corsodyl mouthwash. We don't normally take wisdom teeth out unless you've had at least 2 episodes of infection. HTH

Grumpystiltskin · 29/11/2011 13:20

Obviously if it's being removed by your dentist rather than referred to hospital, the two episodes of infection (inter alia) isn't necessarily the case. Hope you're feeling better?

Thanks everyone. Am feeling much better today, thank God!
