not AIBU but help im having contraction like pain 5 months after giving birth???

Sorry but I moved this from childbirth as I only had one answer in 2 hours.

Yesterday I started to get a pain very similar to what I experienced in labour, I know after pains are common but at 5 months post delivery is a bit much is it not??

I had a normal birth and had an epidural which wore off twice which resulted in me feeling my contractions down one side only.

The pain is around the left side of my back and and down my left leg and feels exactly like my contraction pain, albeit not as bad, if my contraction pain was a 10 (more like 20) on the scale this is like a 5/6. I had after pains for a few days after birth, and during the first time we had sex i felt a similar pain to this but that was 3.5 months ago.

the pain is back now and it started this time yesterday evening too and lasted for a few hours.

Wondering has anyone had anything similar??

really don't know :( bumping this as I am sure someone more helpful will be along very soon so hang tight x

marriedinwhite · 27/11/2011 20:21

Sounds as though it might be sciatica related. See what the GP says tomorrow.

DoingMyVeryBest · 27/11/2011 20:22

Are you breast feeding? Might be caused by that. If it's not gone soon though, I ask a professional.

Hope you're not in too much pain.

bananamam · 27/11/2011 20:23

Is it the return of you period? I took a few months after both of mine and had pains like this maybe two months before my period returned.....periods def hurt more after too, but only for the first couple. It could be ovulation, it could be body preparing for the return of it. I had horrendous periods before giving birth...ie they were as bad as the first stage of labour. They died down after my fist thankfully and now I maybe have one bad painful period per year....

Ps I ovulate on both sides and feel this, but every period pain I feel shoots down my right side...not sure why but has been like this since I was 16

Ah good old AIBU always quick with the answers!

It's a possibility stranded, its day 11 of cycle so could be, but if thats the case wonder why im getting it now (have had 3 peroids since the birth btw)

No not breastfeeding anymore Doingmyverybest so not that.

Could be you ovulating, although sounds very severe and especially when it never happened before. Have your periods started back after giving birth? I would go and get it checked out though either way. You did mention that you had sex 3.5 months ago so potentially could be and ectopic pregnancy.

Ahhdodo · 27/11/2011 20:33

*an

BertieBotts · 27/11/2011 20:33

Are you bleeding or just having the cramps? I hope the GP can shed some light tomorrow.

TheDetective · 27/11/2011 20:40

Do you need a poo? Everything pain in life can be fixed by having a good poo :p

Seriously though - could be your bowels. You might have eaten something slightly dodgy, but not enough to make you vomit.

Or at least that's what happens to me. Now and then :)

troisgarcons · 27/11/2011 20:41

When you menstruate it is the same muscle action as contractions (hence some women have a particularly bad time of the month).

inspireme · 27/11/2011 20:44

no bleeding, just a constant pain down my right leg from hip to half way down leg, and occasionally into right side of lower back.

Will try to get doc app tomor.

ahhdodo have had 3 periods since though, i asssume u can't get them and be pregnant even with ectopic?

Had a weird feeling I was pregnant a few wks ago though, actually done a test but it was negative, but period was a few days late then so was crapping myself, when it came it was very long though, usually 2/3 days was nearly a wk and v light.

Sounds very like sciatica or nerve pain to me. (not a dr). Hope you feel better soon.

HelenMumsnet · 27/11/2011 20:50

Evening. Sorry, OP, but this is not an AIBU thread. We'll move it to Health: please do keep "bumping" it and it'll stay visible in Active Convos - that's the best way to make sure more people see it. Smile

BertieBotts · 27/11/2011 20:53

You can have a light period when pregnant. Have you had any shoulder tip pain at all? It does sound like it's hip-related though.

inspireme · 27/11/2011 21:01

No shoulder tip pain Bertie

The thing that's scaring me is the fact that my contractions were mostly in my back and down my leg's and not so much in my stomach so it just feels exactly the same as that.

It's getting slighty worse, although I think it's probably the painkillers wearing off.

You've definitely had periods inspireme? When this happened to me (9 months after childbirth) it turned out that it was a 12 week miscarriage and I hadn't known I was pg (ebf etc).

inspireme · 27/11/2011 21:16

Yeah definately had them (3 I think) although the last one was lighter and longer, I'm also on the pill but tbh have missed a few, can't seem to remember to take them!!!

Done the pg test about 6 days before peroid was due so a possibility it wouldn't have showed up anyway.

What were your symptoms MrsDistinctly ???

OP posts:
MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 27/11/2011 21:39

I didn't have any morning sickness or anything! I hadn't had a period so didn't miss them either.

Literally the first thing I knew was terrible terrible cramping and then bleeding. I had no idea what was going on - was in the house with my dd by myself as dh was away - in a rented house where I knew none of the neighbours.

I ended up being taken to hospital where they kept me in overnight.

I'd get another pg test tbh, even if it is just to rule it out - then go and get yourself the implant if you don't want another quickly!

inspireme · 27/11/2011 21:59

Sounds awful MrsDistinctly hope your over it.

think another pg test would give me piece of mind, have had a niggly feeling a few wks I was pg, thanks for your help!

OP posts:
MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 27/11/2011 22:02

No problem!

Actually, it was the least traumatic of my miscarriages, and I was pg with my ds within another couple of months.

I would say always listen to that niggly feeling!! Grin
