Does this sound like a hernia?

DP has been feeling ill for a few weeks - started out thinking he had a groin strain, then thought he found a lump in his groin, now it is a constant dull tummy ache, sometimes extending to the upper chest. He says it doesn't hurt more when he goes to the loo/eats (and he still has an appetite). He's more tired than normal, but nothing else seems "wrong" - no temperature/fever, no vomiting, not even nausea apparently, although his tummy looks and feels bloated (like when you have trapped wind). The pain doesn't change when walking/sitting/lying down. He has an overactive imagination, so I've banned him from looking online, but have been doing some clicking around on his behalf.

He's been to the doctor, who couldn't find a lump and apparently had a good old poke around the appendix area, he's been for a urine sample and that's come back clear... Seeing the doctor again in a fortnight, on the basis that there's nothing causing immediate cause for concern.

But he's definitely not well, and I'm starting to think it might be an inguinal hernia? I'm not a doctor, and this is entirely gleaned from scouring NHS direct. I'm getting a bit frustrated, because he won't let me go in with him when he sees the doctor, but he isn't relaying the information properly, and is vague about what questions he is asking her. I've said I think he should be asking for an ultrasound if she still can't find anything in the next appointment, but I asked him to ask her a question last time and he "forgot". When he had the lump I was convinced it was cancer and he failed to mention for a good ten minutes after coming out of the doctor's that "she couldn't find anything".

I'm trying to be all calm and laid back about everything, because he is working himself up enough, which probably doesn't help, but I am starting to get a bit worried and it's frustrating because he is so useless vague about going to the doctor. Might it just be a muscular strain and then his mind playing tricks on him?
