Back pain. Is there any relief other than loads of neurofen?

My DH has had lower back pain for 11 days now, he lifted something to heavy and now has trouble getting from sitting to standing and also has some weird pains shooting through the tops of his legs and groin.

We have booked a doctor's app for Wednesday but I'm wondering if there is anything we can do to ease the pain, we are trying heat pads and neurofen. I don't want to offer a massage incase he gets frisky I make it worse.

Try and find a private physio in your area....sounds like a slipped disc to me ;(

Mollified · 20/11/2011 20:40

Use ICE not heat - a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a table cloth will be fine - put it on the area for about 20 mins then refreeze them then repeat.
Get an appointment with a chiropractor or an osteopath.
Massage is probably fine and if he is getting frisky its not too bad!

If he is getting frisky I agree with Mollified
Alternate heat and cold, if he is sitting down a high backed chair with lumbar support will help [just a cushion] sit straight and I was told put a telephone directory under one foot it helps straighten the spine
Cold/Ice spray from the chemist does not smell like deep heat and offers relief.
In bed use pillows like a pregnant woman would between knees and at lower back and a rolled towel around the neck to help strangle himsupport and keep the spine straight.
Poor man I do feel for him and my deepest sympathies to you

And wear proper shoes not runners or slippers was another thing I was told to do as proper shoes that support the feet will help with posture
Look up the Alexander Technique for advice on sitting and standing
I get up out of the chair by going to the floor and standing from a kneeling position when my back goes.

Thanks for the replies.getting frisky was a joke and not an option at the minute Angry I wouldn't bother MN'ers with a dull back ache thread if I was still getting some.

SOrry about the crap grammar and spacing, I'm trying out my iPad.

Would it help for him to have a good stretch to try and free up the pain?

Thought I should come back and say thank you and that JammmyGirl was right, DH has a slipped disc.

He has been given Diazipam, Amitriptyline and Tramadol, been taking these since yesterday morning and doesn't feel any better yet but I'm assuming it will take a day or 2 for them to kick in.
