This was less than 3 years ago btw.

Not that I had flu, mind.

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 00:45

Slightly off topic but my Mum used to put a huge blob of Vicks Vapour rub under my nose to go with the junior disprin. We always had Cherry Tunes as well. Happy Days. Sad

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 20/11/2011 01:46

Lucozade for flu - maybe when I was about 8 years old. And for earache. And having my tonsils out.

Useless.

The ice cream helped more.

giraffesCantDookForApples · 20/11/2011 02:10

my dad always a buys me it when ill. I hate it. Reminds me of being ill as a child.

nooka · 20/11/2011 02:24

It's a fairly good rehydration solution, as are to be honest most fizzy type drinks (fast energy with water really). My understanding from reading tests a while back is that all the isotonic type stuff makes very little difference indeed for the average person. Plus a bit of marketing.

maighdlin · 20/11/2011 02:34

when DD was ill recently they told me to give her flat coke as it would hydrate her and give her some energy as she wasn't eating (kidney infection poor thing was miserable aged 2) i think because its you need energy to fight the bug so its easy to get in. i can't stand the stuff and prefer ribena for a sugar boost when sick

I remember only being allowed to have it as a child when I was ill. I thought it was a sort of special medicine. This was in the days when it still had the crinkly orange plastic around the top

Even now I feel guilty drinking it for no particular reason.
You took the words out of my mouth!

startail · 20/11/2011 02:39

Having had food poisoning on holiday I can assure you coke works. Possibly because it's nearer to the concentration of blood. You don't instantly want to throw it up again like plain water and the sugar makes you less shaky. Add a packet of crisps and it's not a bad approximation to rehydration mixture and it tastes much better.
Works for sun stroke too, bloody waterpark queues.

Moln · 20/11/2011 09:59

the original stuff has written bottle that it is "not appropriate for replacing the fluid lost during diarrhoea"
i
maybe he was suggesting it for a very quick calorie intake as he knew i hadn't eaten for a few days

i can only imagine that the enegry booast is a short term on as sugar intake usually is.

Did't help anyway, ended up, the day after his visit, in a&e then hospital for a week regardless

I too remember it in the 60s with the crinkly paper.
I knew I was ill if I was allowed it, as it was "very dear"..... Ditto grapes, which my mum once sat and peeled for me when I was particularly ill.

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 10:55

Black seedless grapes were always the gift of choice if anyone was in hospital when I was a child. In a brown paper bag. Exotic!!

Grapes are bloody expensive now as well!!

RetroMuff · 20/11/2011 11:15

Tsk Sparklingbrook, Lucozade's for when you're ill, it's Irn Bru for hangovers Grin

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 11:21

Oh right Retro Grin Is Tizer or Vimto any good for anything?

BertieBotts · 20/11/2011 11:35

Yes the fizzy lucozade is no good for rehydration. Love it though. Especially orange/cherry/blackcurrant flavours.

tethersend · 20/11/2011 11:38

"It used to have 'aids recovery' written on the bottle."

This was before Aids though, right?

scarlettsmummy2 · 20/11/2011 11:44

My mum still goes on about flat coke when you are sick, and my grandmother always gave lucozade. Presumably there must have been some evidence that they could help.

moondog · 20/11/2011 11:48

I think coconut water is one of the best tihngs you can drink to rehydrate after illness.
Not so easy to fing in Blighty obv. but you can get it in cartons.

Ooh, frisson of nostalgia at mention of cellophane on Lucozade bottles!
Where was it?
All over or just the top?

ebbandflow · 20/11/2011 11:50

My mum and dp both swear by lucozade when they have flu symptoms. Good point that about having plain water when you are vomiting, I agree it make you vomit again, would def remember to try flat coke.

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 12:46

I thought the cellophane was all over? Or was it just over the top? Like an orange gift wrapped drink. Grin

GwendolineMaryLacey · 20/11/2011 13:01

All over it seems. I bloody love google sometimes! :o

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 13:13

Brilliant Gwendoline. Don't know what cellophane was for though. Save gift wrapping to take to the hospital???

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 20/11/2011 16:31

My DD has chilled coca cola when she had a dodgy gut or period nausea. Works a treat.

Vicki1981 · 20/11/2011 17:42

I always have it when I'm under the weather - perks me up!

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 17:45

Good news! Lucozade have bought out 'Black Edition'. It's cola flavoured! Grin

moondog · 20/11/2011 18:56

Fantastic Gwen.
Presumable so one can produce it at bedside of afflicted with a flourish, in manner of a hamper?
