is trimethoprim an antibiotic???
dd2 has just finished 2 courses of different antibiotics and now been prescribed trimethoprim to treat a urinary infection.
I wanted to start giving her some probiotics after finishing the 2 preivous lots of antibiotics. Can I give probiotics to her whilst she is taking the trimethoprim?? any docs out there or anyone know? Please

Yes, it's an antibiotic - one of the most commonly used ones to prevent/treat UTIs.

I'm not a doctor but I use probiotics myself when taking antibiotics, and I would have no hesitation in giving them to my dd. She's 4.5 though ... and I wouldn't have given them to her when she was younger than about 3.

thanks WWW. my dd is 4. I thought you couldn't give probiotics whilst taking an antibiotic? however she now has to take the trimethoprim for a couple of weeks apparently.... I am keen to get some good bacteria back into her poor little system

I have heard its recommended to take probiotics whilst on antibiotics as antibiotics kill all bacteria and probiotics put the good ones back. this is why antibiotics cause diarear and thrush and all sorts of secondary infections due to having no good bacteria keeping the balance inside.

my kids have probiotics anyway and i would certainly increase dosage if they went on antibiotics

As far as I know, the best time to take a probiotic is at the same time as the antibiotic - to negate the effects of the antibiotic and stop things like thrush and diarrhoea before they start.

Agree with WWB - dd suffers these infections which are now finally being investigated. Pr-biotics are fine to use alongside abs. Hope she feels better soon.
