Neti Pots - Anyone used these?

I used a neti pot for the first time last night. I've had years of recurrent sinusitis and ear infections every time I get a cold and I have been recommended this treatment but always dismissed it as I equated it with getting seawater up your nose (owww).

For anyone who doesn't know its a small pot (metal or ceramic seems to be usual) with a thin spout which you fill with warm water and saline solution, insert the spout in one nostril and pour the solution through and it comes out of the other nostril after giving the inside of your head a good clearout.

I definitely sort of felt it working, swilling around my sinuses but the solution also filled the back of my throat and came out of my mouth more than my nose, making me gag.

I can't see any reason why this would happen, my head was at the right angle and I read the instructions thoroughly. I can't find any information about this, or really any negative or critical information on the net, which I would have thought there would be plenty of!

Has anyone here used a neti pot and have experienced the solution appearing in places it oughtn't?!

hey thanks. I haven't had any trouble with nasal congestion this time, just blocking in my ears. I'm going to persevere as I liked the washed out feeling, I will be positive and view the simultaneous saline gargle as a bonus treatment.

You need to try making a 'k' sound at the back of your throat as you are rinsing. This should stop it coming into your mouth - well it works for me!

thanks, i tried blocking the back of my throat with my tongue (the 'k' sound, Marrow ?) this morning and also pouring much slower to allow time for the solution to get through my supposed limited tubes (so my GP says) and I was much more successful.

Its my new favourite thing. Now i know what to buy everyone for xmas haha!
