Menieres - any survival tips?

I was diagnosed with Menieres a few months ago, however the symptoms have been present for quite some time now - I am known for my regular "clumsy accidents" and I have had tinnitus and migraines for years. The last 18 months have been the worst - lots of migraines and vertigo attacks that have lasted up to a week at a time. I broke my coccyx having a drop attack on the stairs a few months ago and am constantly stumbling into things.

More recently I have managed the migraines with meds, however I cannot take anything for the vertigo side of things and the tinnitus, ear pain/pressure and hearing is really taking a turn for the worse.

Betahistine and various other travel sickness type drugs have made me feel considerably worse - I am a bit of a hippy tree hugger because prescribed drugs really don't seem to agree with me, I am ridiculously sensitive to chemicals. The only thing that seems to help is Pukka 3 Ginger Tea, seriously - it has been a life saver, but that is only effective for the nausea. I tend to cook with as much ginger as I can lay my hands on and always have a packet of ginger nuts to hand!

Does anyone out there have any non drug based methods of controlling the symptoms of Menieres? Also any hints on what directions I should be going in with treatments and coping strategies would be brilliant. I have tried looking on the internet, but it is so difficult to know what might work and what will just be a very expensive waste of time...

Asteria - I don't have Menieres but do have MAV which causes dizziness and sickness. So sorry to read you are going through this, it sounds awful for you.

There is a thread on here for lots of us suffering with dizziness and sickness. A lot of the ladies have been diagnosed with Menieres - they may be able to help you. I have found it a great thread of support.

Just a thought - is it definately Menieres? Mine was initially diagnosed as a vestibular issue but now, due to the migraines and tinnitus they think I have MAV. I am on some preventative meds to help with it and to stop me getting the attacks.

Anyway, I will link the thread for you - there may be some useful info on it for you. I do hope that you can find a way to control the symptoms and help you feel better. It is living hell dealing with the dizziness and sickness.

It's defiantly menieres unfortunately. My hearing is getting worse with every recent attack, with some it can go totally in one ear for a few hours or sometimes days. I'll check out the thread. thanks - have been away for quite some time and it takes a while to get back into the swing of what is going on here!

Many years ago when I was diagnosed with Menieres my consultant advised me to cut out all salt in cooking and sprinkling on food at the table.Since then I have had only one attack in 2003, the balance is still a bit of a problem though but is manageable.
