DD (16 months) has about half a dozen small spots by the back of her shoulders, chest and back. They are red with yellow or clear pus inside (YUCK) and they are raised. They have come up in the last 18 hours. She doesn't seem to have a temperture (well she does feel a little hot) and is playing quite happily. There was a case of chicken pox at her nursery. Is it the dreaded pox or something else or just bites from an insect (we have been to a butterfly farm yesterday)?

If it is the pox, more will appear pretty quickly. They do sound like chicken pox spots. If they are, the younger they get it, the better, so don't worry

this site has lots of pictures of spots! Scroll down to chicken pox...

Definitely sounds like chicken pox. My 17 month old recently had chicken pox and only got 10 spots in all and didn't really suffer other than being slightly more irritable. My older child had them at the same time and was covered in well over a hundred spots and really suffered. So hopefully you will be lucky and get it over with early.

The pain though is they can't go back to nursery until the last spot has crusted over - roughly about a week from seeing the first spot.

If the reported case of chickenpox was about 2- 3 weeks ago and your dd would have been in contact a day or so prior to that then sounds most likely. Get some piriton, calamine and bicarb of soda on standby just incase it spreads and itches.

When ds had chicken pox he had a fever a day or so before the spots came. He was fine when the spots appeared.
Has your DD felt poorly in the last couple of days?

cazzybabs · 01/11/2003 20:34

I think it is chicken pox as she now has lots more spots...we are back in the UK now having been in Sweeden so will get LIZS suggestions of things to put on the spots as DD is scraching some of them. When can they go back to nursey - what do you mean crusting over (a thick moment)?

It's when the spots get scabs on them, Cazzybabs - yeah, lovely, I know! Apparently, there's a calamine cream which is better to use than the lotion, it's less drying.
