had really bad night with ds and he has not stopped crying since he woke this morning. given him neurofen and teething stuff. off food and milk. he has had a cold last week. He has been pulling his ear this morning.

my question is: If he has an ear infection surely wouldn't he have a high temperature? (His temperature is normal) Don't want to drag him to doctors if its just teething.

Oh go to the doctors whatever it is! He wouldn't cry like that for no reason surely?

harpsichordcarrier · 28/12/2005 11:39

if the pain is not being eased by otc medication then I wold definitely call the doctor and get his/her advice, or failing that go in to the surgery.

foxinsocks · 28/12/2005 11:45

it is possible to have very painful ears with no ear infection - dd gets something like this after a cold if she has bad glue ear or something.

I don't know how old your ds is but I imagine if he is still howling then it's probably better to get the GP to have a look just to rule out something like an infection.

daisiesinaline · 28/12/2005 11:56

Oh no. Don't mention glue ear! DD2 had that and it was awful. DS3 is 8 1/2 months.

If DD2 had glue ear is there a higher chance that DS3 may have it? Does is work like that or is it just a random thing that happens?

I'd just get down to your gp asap so he can be checked over.

foxinsocks · 28/12/2005 11:59

to be honest, I don't know if it runs in families. I do know that I suffered badly with it as a child (am always getting told I should have had grommits!) and dd suffers with it but ds (touch wood) has never had a problem.

I think all children can get a touch of it after a cold (because of blocked and inflamed passages) and possibly with the teething, it's making the pain even worse.

Still, probably better to go to the GP to rule out the infection rather than being up all night with him tonight!

LIZS · 28/12/2005 12:04

Could just be congestion, like his ear needs to pop but he can't make it. Also a lot of ear infections are viral rather than bacterial so theyre may not be much you can do aside from the pain relief and making sure his nose is clear. Wouldn't necessarily be a temperature even with an infection. Don't think there is any genetic predisposition to ear infections/glue ear.

If his teething is causing broken nights maybe he is just overtired and irritable. Worth gettign him checked anyway to rule anything more serious out.

daisiesinaline · 28/12/2005 12:07

Oh thanks you guys. Feel a bit better. Think I will get him checked. You lot are good. ;)

DD pulled at her ears during a bad bout of teething, I took her to the doc anyway as she was also off food and vomiting and I wasn't sure. It can't hurt, besides, misery loves company and I found just venting my fears and frustrations to the doc made it alot more bearable when the crying was at it's peak!!!

santabops · 28/12/2005 17:42

ds had an ear infection once that I was unaware of - doc picked it up when checking him for something else!?

daisiesinaline · 28/12/2005 18:01

Well. What a day!!!

Didn't take him to docs in the end . He finally took a bottle at 1 pm and fell asleep for 2 hours. He was better when he woke and has had a bright red cheek all afternoon. So I think it is teething. Didn't want his tea but did take another bottle. Will keep an eye though and take him to docs to get him checked tomorrow if we have another awful night just in case. Thanks everyone. X
