question about periods

bit of a thread about a thread, but I have always wondered this:

why do people (like me) who get extra anaemic, do so during heavy periods?

you're not bleeding from your general pool of blood, you're shedding your womb lining, so SHOULDN'T you feel more symptomatic AFTER periods when you are re-lining your womb, rather than during?

It doesn't make sense to me? I feel like I am loosing blood from my general supply when I have my periods but then A level biology tells me I took that blood out of general circulation at a different point in my cycle when I was building the womb lining up, so by the time I shed it I shouldn't notice it in the rest of my body?????

does that make sense and can anyone explain?

Well I'm not good with science but, like you say, you took the bood out of general circulation at some point, and more than is average/normal to lose this way, so that is how you get anaemic. I suffered like you, and always felt the worst for a few days after my period. Blood tests revealed that my iron levels were dangerously low.

Please, do not put up with this. There are ways to help you. I used tranexamic acid from the gp for a few years, but my periods were getting progressively worse, until it reached the point that there was little effect from taking the tranexamic acid.

Go to your gp, ask for a scan to rule out fibroids etc, I had one and my results were clear, so I had a mirena coil fitted and it is working well for me.

However, I suffered unnecessarily for several years when I didn't need to, because I was scared of trying the coil. I should have tried it a lot sooner - even if it hadn't worked for me, there would have been other solutions, such as ablation.

Please don't let your periods rule your life.

thank you, I am fine I have regular blood tests etc Smile

mainly just curious as to why the symptoms really hit DURING the period, which is not when the main part of your body looses the blood to become lining IYKWIM
