antidepressant angst

JJ · 29/10/2003 18:45

After much discussion with GP and husband, I've decided to go on antidepressants. I've never taken them before and am going tomorrow morning to discuss which one is appropriate. Like an idiot, I looked it up on the internet and now have nearly psyched myself out.

Soooo.... could anyone offer some reassurance, let me know how the "what to take" visit will be like or otherwise bolster my courage? I really do think it's the right thing, but after having read about all possible side effects I've got the fear.

Thanks. (Have to give my son a bath right now-- wanted to post before people went to bed or started in on the wine. )

Just been subscribed AD's by my doctor - been taking them for about two weeks, and apart from feeling sicky and tiered (although IBS could be causing the sickness), don't feel any (positive) affects yet, so it has been a bit of a let-down (I stupidly hyped them up as the answer). Just really glad to find out I'm not the only one First time on mumsnet - will def be back!

susanmt · 03/11/2003 16:09

TeriS - it can take up to a month for them to start working and some people need a higher dose than the initial dose the doc gives you, which makes them take even longer to work. Stick with it, it will most likely just take a couple more weeks. Which ones are you taking?

TeriS · 03/11/2003 16:14

Thanks - will make sure I stick with it. Taking Oxactin...

Just had appt with GP last night, found out that they have been testing Seroxat in the USA and found it to be V addictive. Supposedly Ciprolex etc and a similar one begining with F is now AD of choice as has v little addictive problems.

How r u doing JJ???

melsy · 11/11/2003 13:16

Any News JJ ??? How are u doing ? Feeling any better??

JJ · 11/11/2003 19:18

Hi! Sorry for not responding sooner. I was out for the weekend.

I'm feeling huge amounts better. My feeling is that I probably should have gone to the doctor last year sometime.... it's made such a difference and I feel like "me" again. It's been nearly 2 weeks and while I have dips (what would have been attacks) for no reason, eg while cooking, they're not too bad.

Melsy, I hope you feel better soon. Let me know if you have any questions about Citalopram (Cipramil/Cipralex, kind of). The drug seemed to kick in nearly right away.

Kaz33, hope it works for you, too.

JJ, that is fantastic news. I am so glad you are feeling better. I know the feeling of I should have done something sooner, when I realised how much better I felt, I wished I hadn't waited so long, and even then when I had the tablets I was still iffy about taking them. That's why I say to people now, go and see your doc NOW! Hindsight is all very well!

tigermoth · 12/11/2003 17:16

jj, glad you're feeling better so soon and don't feel that the pills are wrong for you.
Looking back to the beginning of the thread, your original message of trepidation was just 3 weeks ago. Don't things move fast

Janstar · 12/11/2003 18:11

So pleased to hear that, JJ.

pie · 12/11/2003 18:33

Also glad to hear you are beginning to feel better, take care xxx

Hi JJ - been a few days now since your last post - how r u doing. GP impressed apon me the need to take citalopram this morning and gave me a prescription to start immediately. Still worried and have not yet taken them. Funny how we have a similar thread going "afraid I have pND" I have probably said this b4 on here , brain is so foggy these days. U r my cipramil mate,so please let me know how its going and ease my worries!!!!Strange how last time I got depression took the pills and wondered why I had resisted as felt so amazingly better and now a year or 2 later I am in the same boat and hesitant all over again as if I have not experienced it b4.
