Can someone tell me about the joys of a colonoscopy please.

I'm due to have a colonoscopy at the end of the month. All I know so far is that I will need to do a bowel clean beforehand (not sure whether this is a few hours before or 24hrs before) and I'll be doped up on pethadine while they do the colonoscopy.

Have had 'IBS' for at least 6 years now and it's getting worse (I am under a huge amount of stress though) so they want to investigate. Although I'm still waiting for results of a blood test and hope it's just coeliac disease or something treatable. The consultant was umming and aahing over it being something to do with my sections and hysterectomy or a bug I caught in China 9 years ago.

TIA

Keep the wet wipes and sudocream handy...

Gets to the stage where you literally poo out clear water!

reporting back......

The actual procedure was ok, mainly because I was whacked out on pethadine, midazolam and gas & air Smile. The last thing I remember is chatting to the consultant as he pumped the drugs into my hand, the next thing I new it was 2hrs later and I woke up in recovery. I have a vague, dreamlike, memory of necking the G&A and catching a glimpse of the screen at one point but no pain or cramping at all. I haven't even had the awful (and embarrassing) trapped wind that I'd heard about, the nurse said they did a good job of clearing it out as they finished.

I did get very sick yesterday morning before I went in, my system was empty but I couldn't keep water down. The hospital got me in a wheelchair as soon as I arrived then got me lying down so I didn't keel over. I thought they'd think I was being a wimp but they said the picolax can wipe some people out and they didn't make me hang around for long.

Results all ok and my insides look fine, small comment from the consultant saying it seems to be 'post-infective IBS'. Just got to wait for the result of the biopsies, according to my notes they took 12 from various places. (TMI) The biopsies have caused some bleeding when I'm on the loo though, my notes say this is to be expected for the first 24hrs.

No kids today as mum has taken them out for the day. Will be doing some 'princessing' shortly to cheer myself up.

So, all in all, not too bad and I'm very glad it's been done. But it has wiped out 3 days this week and I haven't been able to do anything with the kids in that time, not a quick procedure.
