Probs with established Mirena coil

Have had my mirena since ds2 was born and just love it (so, nearly 3 years). All has been well - dream product and would recommend especially since I haven't had a period since ds2 was conceived (i.e. not ovulating with Mirena). However, I've been bleeding sporadically for the last three weeks (first time since insertion) and it's been heavier the last 2-3 days including 24 hours of bright red blood. Not a large volume. Do know that some people do have periods on Mirena but not sure if this is one or not and why, if so, it's been so long. I'm from UK but not there at the moment (in Australia; Medicare covers immediate necessary care only). Do I need to see a GP/go to ED or is it just one of those things that happens sometimes? Advice appreciated.

i have a mirena but only for 4 mnths, so am still in the period where everything is 'bedding in'. not wanting to be too graphic, but is there any chance the coil could have been knocked?, ie during sex. i've had coils in the past before this one and had some bleeding due to it moving slightly inside and scratching me. have you had a yearly coil check done recently?, i would get it looked at just to be sure, sounds like its unlikely to be a period.

or perhaps, just to be sure, do a pg test???

Yearly check was in April and I planned on delaying April 06 one to Aug 06 when we'll be back in the UK. Shouldn't have thought could be pg given protractedness of bleeding. Maybe will test anyway; could be an issue in getting home again...more likely could have moved would have thought. May pluck up courage to go to ED (my GP is also the gynae person in the practice so not used to anyone else hoking around in there..)

Hannahsaunt - I've had my Mirena Coil in for nearly a year and still get periods every month! Okay... they're a bit lighter and not as painful, but are still quite heavy for a day or 2.... then get really light for another 5 or 6 days.

The mirena isn't guaranteed to stop your period.... but a nice side-effect for some people is that it DOES stop them! It is used for controlling extremely heavy periods as it makes them lighter. You should still ovulate though, so there is no reason why this can't be a period?

BUT.... the fact that it is out of the ordinary I think you should perhaps see a Doctor. Are you in any pain?

I spoke to my OB/Gyn about this and he just seemed to think it happened occasionally. I'll go a few months with nothing at all, a few very light and the occasional month with red bleeding, usually in the summer ! I've had mine 4 years now and have had this happen 2 or 3 times.

Just a quick update - bleeding went on for 4 1/2 weeks at which point I decided it was time to see a gynaecologist. She was reassuring but carried out a whole battery of tests from swabs to an internal ultrasound. All was absolutely fine so went home to await test results and bleeding stopped. Had follow up appointment today - bleeding had stopped for a fortnight and then another week of bleeding. 2 consultants differed on cause (though neither felt that it was anything worrisome) but agreed that if it had started to be unstable then best course of action was to have it removed (bothersome to have such sustained and unpredicatable bleeding) ... so after 3.75 years of never thinking about contraception, we're going to have to be careful!

I also have the Mirena and again no periods for years, I would be concerned if this happened to me. It sounds like your body is trying to expel it. Maybe ask to have it removed, leave it a month or so then have another one.
