My DS of 6 months has not had a poo for a week. Has anyone else had the same problem? Should I worry?

is he breastfed? is he on solids?
i would be a little bit worried... does he seem to be in any pain? does he drink water?

NotQuiteCockney · 15/12/2005 20:00

That's not unusual.

Have you recently started solids? Is your DS drinking much water?

Or have you recently moved him onto follow-on milk?

He has recently started on solids and had quite a bit of banana which my hv said can cause constipation. I have given him some water, he is still solely breastfed. Is water the best cure?

Water is good. Or prune juice if it's urgent.

I'd stick to water, unless he's unhappy.

Also, maybe cut down on banana, or take it a bit slower with solids.

It is strange because I have been very careful with the solids but I will give it a rest until he goes. He does not seem unhappy yet or suffering with it but I can't imagine where it is all going? Have you had the same experience?

Their guts always go a bit funny when you introduce solids - it's a big change! Much as their guts are weird when they're born.

Does he normally poo really often? By that age, my DS2 was only pooing once a week. But when solids started, he started going much more often. Unfortunately.

(Oh, and when it comes, it'll be horrible horrible real poo, not reasonably pleasant breastmilk poo.)

I'm having exactly the same thing with dd just now. She seems quite happy also. I have a doctors app. tomorrow anyway so will ask him about it then.

I saw the hv today and she seemed to think he will go any time soon. But i'm so used to him going every day that it has been such a worry.I can't wait for this huge smelly explosion! I just hope it doesn't happen when we are out doing the christmas shopping!

Yep, had this with DD when we started solids - not for a week, but still much longer gaps between poos than what she'd been doing till then. Took a few weeks, on and off, to get 'regular' again....found very diluted prune juice (ie soaked a couple of prunes in a whole cup of water for half an hour, strained, and diluted again if looked more than very pale brown) helped a bit. But mostly, just time! Wishing you an explosion-free Xmas....

Thanks! You too.
