Ear Thermometers and reliability

Iamseeingstars · 19/09/2011 22:24

Have been using a Braun ear thermometer but getting erratic readings, when taken one after another they are varying quite widely, also getting different readings from each ear.

I have to record my temperature daily and looking for advice on what is completely reliable. Should I get an old fashioned mouth thermometer?
Do the Braun ones become unreliable over time?

All recommendations appreciated.
Thanks

I am no expert (i do not have the braun one) but have found ear thermometers get unreliable after a while.

I find they give low readings in the ear if there's an ear infection.

I put them under the tongue ((like conventional ones) when the child is old enough to understand as it seems to be more accurate. On the forehead gives a basic test.

Oh yes, and I also find that if you do it first thing in the morning when you've been sleeping on one ear, that ear will be much higher than the other ear.

You can tell I've studied this can't you? Grin

seeing stars - Hi. I bought a Boots digital one, intended for kids primarily and put it under my tongue. It was about £8 I think, and it did me fine for the daily temperature check, and it is still working now, 2 years later. I second what DeWe said - stick it under the tongue, or in your armpit (eeew) Sometimes they measure a bit low, but if you know yours does, then you can still detect the telltale temperature change.

some of the Braun thermoscan have heated tips to improve accuracy. I have one and it seems to work well. The ear is the best place to measure body temperature as it is the most consistent place.
