how is she today fruitshootsandheaves?

Is she in intensive care?

beautifulgirls · 01/09/2011 19:44

Still thinking of you and hope things are improving for your daughter.

Hulababy · 01/09/2011 19:46

I hope she is coninuting to improve today.
She is in the best place. The hospital can help her to get better. You couldn't have known.

fruitshootsandheaves · 01/09/2011 20:03

Have just got back from visiting her
She has been moved out of her private room onto a ward, which is good as it means she's not considered infectious.
She seemed more 'normal' tonight although quite subdued. She is fine until the pain killers wear off then she's in terrible pain again.
Didn't see a doctor so no idea how long she'll be in, or what the outcome of her heart scan is that she had today (due to a irregular heartbeat when she was in A&E).
Can't relax at home. Hate not knowing what's going on.

I've only just seen your thread.

How bloody scary for you :(

Other than a headache, what symptoms did she have?

Try having a hot bath and a hot milky drink - try to get some sleep.

perfumedlife · 01/09/2011 21:50

That sounds like some kind of improvement or at the very least, more stable. Insist on speaking to a doctor tomorrow op, the not knowing is so stressful. Still praying. Hope you get some rest x

MockingbirdsNotForSale · 01/09/2011 22:22

Thinking of you and your daughter Sad.

beautifulgirls · 01/09/2011 22:48

It doesn't mean it is easy for you, but it definately sounds like things are going in the right direction. I hope that very soon she is out of pain and able to come home with you. Sounds like the doctors are being thorough with her and hopefully no long term effects. Having read up a lot after DD was ill, make sure they do things like hearing tests with her once she is over this. Lots of info on the meningitis research site about after effects - but remember not all people get all effects and she may well be fine. www.meningitis.org/

chickydoo · 01/09/2011 22:52

you poor love, how are you? I had meningitis when I was 22, i'm ok! I am sure your DD will be too, stay strong, there are so many of us thinking of you.

bambiandthumper · 02/09/2011 22:34

lookbutdonttouch · 02/09/2011 22:47

Just seen this and bumping up for you.
How is she today? Have you seen the doctor? Are they keeping on top of the pain medication?

Thinking of you and look after yourself too x

bit of an update
I wrote a long post on my phone on Thursday but it doesn't seem to have got here!
Thanks for the link Beautifulgirls I will have a look at that

DD was originally in EAU in a private room, then on the ward
Yesterday she was moved up to the top floor, to a private room again. Spectacular views of Cambridge not that she can appreciate them.

She was still in a lot of pain and not interested in anything but the doctor came with the results of her lumbar puncture and it would seem that it is the chicken pox virus that is causing her meningitis (she had chicken pox when she was 2). DD said her heart scan was negative but I forgot to ask the doctor about that!

The good news is that now they know exactly what is causing her infection they have put her on an antiviral, i am hoping when i go in later she will be feeling a bit better already.
She will be in for the weekend but we are hoping she'll be home soon after that.

Chippingin - the Symptoms she had apart from a headache was really just backache between her shoulder blades and at the base of her spine. This was obviously a big clue but I thought it was because she'd been bent over her guitar trying to learn to play. i did keep asking if she had neck ache but she never did really. She never had aversion to light either. It was the fact that she started to be sick that convinced me it was meningitis.
One of the things that the paramedics asked her to do was to put her chin down on her chest which she couldn't do.
She did have a rash but it came and went and the doctors didnt think it was a meningitis rash. Probably something to do with it being down to chicken pox virus.

Thankyou for all the good wishes, it's comforting to know that there are so many lovely people out there for support.

I think I have aged about 50 years in the last week!

great news fruit

hope she's back on her feet quickly.

perfumedlife · 03/09/2011 16:53

So relieved for you. Not that this isn't your worst nightmare come true, but now they know what it is they can really start treating it right. Bless you, I know that feeling of aging a hundred years in a week. Just keep thinking ahead a few weeks when you all sit down to a lovely dinner and dd gets back on her guitar, it's coming.

Kalypso · 03/09/2011 20:41

I've just read this thread - how terrifying for you. I'm very glad they now know what's causing the infection and therefore how to treat your DD. Fingers crossed she is able to come home soon. Please make sure you are looking after yourself as well!

beautifulgirls · 03/09/2011 20:46

Hi Fruitshoot - that sounds a lot more encouraging now that they know the cause of it all, and can target the right treatments for her now. Fingers crossed for you that she is feeling a lot better very quickly.

twinmam · 03/09/2011 21:16

Just seen this and couldn't not post. How terrifying for you. Everything crossed for a full and speedy recovery for your DD xxx

Is she home yet?

winnybella · 05/09/2011 23:55

Thank God she's on a road to recovery. Best wishes and hope she's at home with you already.

mycatsaysach · 06/09/2011 00:05

hoping all still going wellx

fruitshootsandheaves · 06/09/2011 13:58

DD is Home!!

YIPEEEE!

She seems to have come home with half the hospital pharmacy, but she is back...whooohooo.
She'd had enough of hospital and asked to come home, they said she needs to take it easy for a week and to contact them if she has any concerns.

She seems ok. Not quite as loud and bolshy as normal yet but getting there!

Thanks for all the replies.
