breast to bottle - how to avoid mastitis?

I have been weaning my ds2 off the boob and onto the bottle. Thought I was going to have to go cold turkey but after 30 mins of him screaming, he took the bottle - hoorah!
So, I have replaced each feed every week and am now down to giving him only a very tiny feed at 10pm but my boobs have been going hard and pretty painful. Now can anyone tell me if I should express and how much should I do it? Sorry if I sound stooopid but I don't want to express too much and produce more milk. Should I just wait and they will right themselves?
I am a bit wary as I got mastitis a month ago (no pain in boobs but got bad fevers and sweats) so don't want to risk getting ill again (it is just impossible to sit in bed and eat cakes/read magazines with 2 boys under 2!)
thanks j.

oh god, don't ask me, I got it all wrong. dd had to go cold turkey in the end and I did the expressing lark thinking I had everything under control and ended up with breasts like meteorites.....
sorry, that's no help to you what so ever is it - I'm sure there are plenty of mumsnetters who can give you some sound advice. what are they playing at?????????

thank you! i am annoyed as i had to do the same with ds1 but i am so braindead that i cannot remember what I did then! My only memory about it was that the last bit of milk that came out was with me hunched over the bath, milk squirting from my boobs! not really how i pictured it would be!
ah well, i am sure i will live.

how are the boobs today then ladyjess?

ladyjess · 09/12/2005 13:35

well, actually they are fine, i gave him a 5 min feed at 10 last night and since then they don't seem to have filled up much!
think i will drop that feed tonight so that is the last breastfeed i will ever do. sad in one way but i just cannot wait to get drunk. i have missed 2 christmases either breastfeeding or pregnant and just could not face another sober one!
so, chin chin!
