Aching Hip Joint

Boring I know but I keep on having an aching hip joint (right) Been bad today and then it might be OK for a few days.
It seems worse when there is wet weather on its way so I'm guessing it's rheumatism. Nothing exotic I'm afraid ladies
Anyone got any cures/ remedies. Sometimes it relieves it if I lie in a warm bath but I usually resort to paracetamol (can't take ibuprofen)
I would like to do without painkillers if possible.

Sorry to be pedantic but there's nothing really called rheumatism as such it's a catch all term for inflammatory joint problems often misused. If you have an inflammatory arthritic condition then you should look at getting treatment for it as the underlying causes can be quite serious (rheumatoid arthritis is probably the best known and can affect your internal organs as well as your joints)
If it's general wear and tear arthritis (the most common type) it's called osteoarthritis and if you are heading to that stage in life (sorry u don't say how old u are) and it's not causing you disabling problems you may just have to live with it although your GP may be able to prescribe some better painkillers
If it's inflammatory in nature get your GP to prescribe some anti inflammitories along with pain relief whilst investigating further. For coping with the everyday try either wheatbags (hot water bottles without the water) & warm baths or ice packs. Hot works better for me but I know others who swear by cold. Oh & rest

Yes, I know I am not getting any younger (over 50) so have got to be patient. Just bought some Ibuleve Gel from pharmacy and will see GP next week if no improvement.
I've got a wheat bag which I use for aches and pains in the winter so must look it out again. I might go for one of those hot water bottles you can put in the microwave. Don't like ice packs tbh.

I take 1000mg twice a day of Glucosamine Sulphate tablets from health shop, they appear to help me and I am 60years old.

It could be bursitis (sp?) pop to the gp and get some advice.

Sparkle Yes, it could be bursitis (housemaid's knee)(tennis elbow) I don't do enough hard exercise to cause any inflammation. However, I do a lot of standing and walking, particularly during the summer so that could be the cause. Went to cinema yesterday afternoon and it was a lot better after sitting down for two hours plus. So you could be right. I'll try the GP soon and soldier on for the time being.

Hi, If you see your GP insist he/she offers you a bone density scan, you may have osteopenia.

I had hip pain but an MRI scan showed I had degenerative discs in my lower spine. GP thought I had bursitis and was very surprised by the MRI scan as definitely didn't have pain in my back.

Thanks for your replies. I have just googled bursitis and it seems the most likely diagnosis. At the moment I am rubbing it with ibuleve and taking painkillers. Can't sleep on that side 'cos it's too tender.
Anyway, it seems a bit better and I will probably go to the GP when the DDs go back to school next week.
