urine tests...quick question

...probably being a bit thick,but when a doctor tests urine - can they tell if there is blood in it just by looking,or is it detected in some other way (with a dipstick)...??

with a dipstick usually unless there is a lot of blood and the urine is coloured by it.

thanks...wasn't sure whether it was a visual test or not...
