Could DD have broken her toe????

Left ddS downstairs to play while I went up to strip the beds, had only been up there 20 minutes when dt1 started screaming, I ran downstairs to find her holding her foot, I think she must have dropped something on her big toe as it was red and the bottom half of the nail was already black.
This was an hour ago, it has'nt swollen but she cant bear me to touch it and it hurts her to walk (though she can walk)

Could it be broken even though it is'nt swollen?
If it is just bruised would it need bandaging or anything?

Yes, it could be broken. Not sure what they can do but I think you should get it checked out at A&E.

Staple remedy for damaged toes is to tape to next toe (if pain permits) so next toe splints it and then it doesn't hurt so much because it can't wiggle. Will she let you? (Bribe her with something?)

Put an ice pack on it ... That shoul releive the swelling / bruising...
Perhaps ibuprofen for pain and inflammation too.
The COld will numb the toe - so that you can strap it.

i broke my toe recently, dh dropped a glass chopping board on it. if it is broken, they don't tend to do anything with toes these days, no xray or anything like that. if its hurting, tape it to the toe next to it for support and give her something for the pain. it will take a while to heal though, mine was hurting for about 6wks (v. painful when i got cramp in it whilst giving birth to ds !). she might have to wear slippers for a few days, i couldn't get a shoe on at first as any movement like that really hurt. ibuprofen is good for bone/muscle pain. hope she's ok.

Actually I've just remembered somebody once telling me about having a blood blister (or similar) under a banged toenail and having excruciating pain until the nail was pierced with a needle to let the blood out - so from the description I suppose it could be that...poor little scrap, hope it feels easier soon.
