pain after colposcopy

i had a colposcopy on Friday, and had to have a few biopsies taken. Since then i have had cramping/period pains. I was just wondering how long these pains will last?

ime not very long at all. Does paracetamol take the pain away? Make sure you give NHS a call if it gets worse instead of better though, but it is normal. I hope you are able to snuggle up and have someone bring you a cuppa!

paracetamol not helping. its not an intense pain just a nagging cramping if that makes sense. dr didnt really talk much about what pain i would have afterwards just wanted a general idea of how long it would last.

Colposcopy pain doesn't usually last for long at all, just a tiny bit crampy for a couple of hours afterwards.

However, you have had a few biopsies so will probably be quite tender for longer. I can't really remember how long it was when I had that done but do know it is worse than just a colposcopy without them.

Ring NHS direct and check with them. And a nice hot drink with some painkillers maybe.

thank you. i dont know if its just me being a wuss but its horrible!! the dr was a bit abrupt in explaining procedure and i didnt have time to ask questions afterwards, so thought i would ask MN. i thought the pain would only last a few hours but it has been non-stop.

Yes mine wasn't pleasant either when I had it done. I had ome other problems going on at the time and it really hurt.

I remember having a period for about 6 weeks afterwards too. Grim. I'd ring NHS direct though and just check that its normal to still feel like that now.

I had pain afterwards but I also had an infection. It was nothing serious and was treated easily with antibiotics but I'd say if you're still feeling crampy in the morning, I'd make an appointment to see your doctor.

Do you have a temperature? That would give you a better clue if it's an infection. Otherwise, it might just be extra sore from the biopsies

thank you for the replies. no temperature, not intense pain, no funny smells(tmi) so dont think its infection. i think if im still sore tomorrow i will go and see my doctor or ring nhs direct just to get a professional opinion.

just wish the dr/nurse doing the colposcopy had given me a bit more info about what happens afterwards.

Some info from the colposcopists' website about what to expect after treatment.
If you do see your GP, perhaps mention more info from the colposcopy staff would be helpful, as they can feed back to the hospital.

I had a colposcopy today and am ok. I would have thought the cramps would have eased a few hours at the most afterwards. I think you should see you GP ,,,, unless you think you have a period coming and its that...?
I have to have some cells removed off my cervix under general anaesthetic, so you are kind of lucky in that sense that you didnt have to have an operation. I hope you are ok and the biopsy report comes back alright.
