dry nappies & high temp in a 9mo

Not sure what to do about ds (9 months).

He has a cold - snuffly and coughy and a bit wheezy. He's had gunky eyes but that cleared up with drops. Since Thursday he has been spiking quite high temps (39 or 40) and we've been giving him nurofen/paracetamol to keep it down. He is extremely whingy until the drugs kick in and then happy as usual.

He's not at all interested in food but drinking reasonable amounts of formula (not quite as much as usual). His poo is green and runny. Today I noticed his nappies are pretty dry (cloth nappies so easy to tell). Not totally dry though. Fontanel not sunken in.

Do I keep giving him the nurofen and letting him have lots of milk and wait for him to get over it? Or should I take him to the docs tomorrow? Or even panic now?

Oh bother. I thought lots of people would say "no its only a cold".

Is it the dry-ish nappy or the high temps that are worrying?

There is an out-of-hours doc. But ds is asleep now and I know if we call a doctor out, ds will sit up and give the doc a huge grin and start chatting to him.

Last time we took ds to an out-of-hours doc (because he had a wierd rash on his legs that didn't disappear under a glass) they said "oh no, he's alert and happy, he is fine".

Maybe I'll phone NHS Direct...

i'd definately phone NHS direct. they say to get a doctor if they have a high temp for more than 24 hours.

I've just been through exactly the same thing with my ds2, also 9 months. He had a high temp (was having to tepid bath him in the middle of the night) - he had a throat infection and was really quite poorly. I'd also offer plain water in a bottle as this can be more hydrating. Would also take to doctor. Good luck!

He had a much better night but I took him to the doctor this morning anyway. It is just a cold. The doc said if you gently pinch the end of their finger, and the colour comes back within 2 seconds, then they aren't dehydrated. Also said one wet nappy every 12 hours was fine.

Thanks everyone!
