Anyone with a high cholesterol reading?

I went for a blood test to check my cholesterol last Tuesday, then this morning got a letter from my doctors saying that they had my results and that I was to go for another test in 6 months time plus included in the letter was an advice sheet on lowering cholesterol. So I obviously have a high rating (I havnt found out results yet) and tbh it has made me a tad anxious!

I was just wondering if anyone else has to have a low cholesterol diet and how they find it and what kind of foods they eat.

I rushed out this morning and bought some Flora probiotic drinks or whatever they are!

I am taking the drinks atm and they are working Make sure you take them with food. Also olive oil oats and oily fish also lower it Good luck it is very worrying but at least you know and can tackle it xx

Oooh thanks noddyholder!

Does it matter when I take the drinks? I was thinking of breakfast time - should be ok with my oats shouldnt it! Ooh how exciting - oats!

I am having salmon and wholemeal rice for my dinner!

I guess at least I know and can do something about it!

You are doing the right things My doctor told me that raised cholesterol is more immediately dangerous in men and women are not as susceptible to cholesterol induced heart problems so fingers crossed Mine is only v slightly raised so am hoping the drinks will do the trick

Yeah thats the thing - I really need to find out what my reading is as I am imagining it to be really high and hopefully its just slightly raised - who knows! I will call the surgery on Monday and find out!

Thanks for your help.

Mine is 5.1....within my GP's surgery limit of normal, but other surgeries use 5 as their limit. TBH, the way GPs interpret cholesterol readings seems to vary hugely!

My DH has familial high cholesterol, and takes statins - no diet, exercise or anything else worked. He's fine on them. But his brother got his down by doing regular exercise, cutting out the obvious dairy/animal fats, and eating oats and oily fish regularly.

I just had lamb chops for dinner, bad bad!

xx ps my mother swears that dark chocolate is almost good for cholesterol.....:0

This thread might be helpful , too.

My dad has had high cholesterol for years. He;s controlled it very well with diet (without being too obsessive). He did go on statins for a short time but they made him feel ill.

Make sure the test results tell you whether its LDL or HDL. HDL is fine, good and dandy- don;t worry about high HDL readings, LDL is bad- so worry more if its high LDL.
