Made an appointment to see doctor tomorrow.

I have a somewhat lumpy breasts, in a past docs sent me for ultrasound a couple of times, each time it turned out to be either a lymph node that was positioned unusually low or last time 2 inflamed nodes....anyhow I had felt two small lumps on the side of breast for some time, but as they were small and smooth and movable and I had an ultrasound only 18 months ago I thought I'll just wait and see Hmm

So last night I found one one the inside of the breast iyswim, doesn't move much and seems irregular. Doesn't have anything similar on the other breast.

I'm 31. I know no one can diagnose on the net, just need some hand holding.

I can't make the appointment, the GP referred me and my letter came today and I go the week after next

winnybella · 02/07/2011 15:14

Oh, ok. Good. The scans themselves are painless (don't know whether you've had mammography before).

I have had a scan before but not a mammogram. I have heard it is uncomfortable and cold. I will have to go alone as I won't be back to get the kids from school so DH will have to pick them up.

Elibean · 02/07/2011 16:26

Fab, mammos are uncomfortable but not awful - and quite quick. The ladies who man the machines are usually very nice (I've had at least 10, always been my experience!). I've found them quite bearable even with tender boobs, but if its a bit sore do take a paracetamol afterwards - because I find they are more tender late, if that makes any sense.
And, by the way, I'm an enormous discomfort-wuss, never mind pain Wink

TheOriginalFAB · 02/07/2011 16:31

I am trying not to think about it. What if I don't fit? Confused

Got tog o DS2 crying.

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/07/2011 23:01

tryuly it's over very quickly- it's uncomfortable and undignified but not dreadful, promise .

winnybella · 02/07/2011 23:24

It wasn't very uncomfortable, tbh- a bit, as they squish your breasts, but not to the point where it hurts. And it takes a few seconds for each photo, they took 4 photos. Really, nothing to worry about.

Okay, thank you.

I have had children and various medical stuff so dignity isn't something I worry about any more.

Do they tell you there and then any results?

MaryAnnSingleton · 03/07/2011 08:37

no,I wouldn't think so,unless consultant is on hand to look at the films -they make you wait a bit so they can check the pictures came out ok.

TheOriginalFAB · 03/07/2011 08:54

Okay, at least I am prepared. I once had a chest x-ray and nearly cried when they called me back for another one within 5 minutes. All it was was the fact that I had a chain on.

Morning fab

I am large of knorkage and was worried that I wouldn't fit the mammography machine .
Twas slightly embarrassing when the tech took one look at me and said "I think I will change the plates" and scuttled off to get the supersized ones Grin

But honestly , it didn't hurt .
And it was over quickly .

I was lucky that my hospital has a one stop breast clinic . Mammogram , scan , biopsy and results all on the same day .
Not every where does this .

Good luck for your appointment , and let us know how it goes .

TheOriginalFAB · 03/07/2011 09:18

Thank you. Is it possible I could find out if the hospital I am going to has a one stop clinic?

Elibean · 03/07/2011 10:06

Fab, you can just phone them and ask. The place I go to has one particular evening when the radiologist (who does the ultrasounds), mammographer and breast specialists are all in at the same time - allows for one-stop stuff.

TheOriginalFAB · 03/07/2011 10:18

Good idea, thank you.

winnybella · 03/07/2011 10:32

Hmm, at the place where I went, twice now, first they do the mammogram, then the ultrasound. During ultrasound the person doing it comments on what she/he sees and then you have to wait about 20 minutes for your pics and notes. They send them to your doctor as well. The notes are signed by two doctors. But it's a private place, perhaps it's different in a hospital. And it's in France. Therefore disregard my unhelpful post Grin

I would phone and ask fab
My experience doesn't seem to be the norm from what I have heard .
It is a very large teaching hospital with a dedicated (attached) cancer hospital .
So that may be why .
It is nhs , and is in the UK , so I don't see why all hospitals couldn't follow this system . But unfortunately not all do .

I was referred by my gp . Seen at breast clinic within 2 weeks . On that appointment I saw a nurse practitioner who gave me a breast examination . She decides whether or not you need to have a mammogram . (Being under 50 it wasn't an automatic thing) . She decided I did need a mammogram and sent across the corridor to the mammography waiting room . They performed my mammogram (with the huuuuuuge plates Grin ) . And based on the (almost immediate) results of that they decided to biopsy me .
Within another hour I had the results of my biopsy .

Very quick , and as I said before , all hospitals should be able to run their clinics like this .
I was there from 9am till almost 1pm . But it was definitely worth being there for a few hours , rather than wait a few weeks between appointments .

Hope this helps you .

TheOriginalFAB · 03/07/2011 11:31

I probably won't have one then on that basis as there is no lump. I have other issues.
